I like to think that in Canada we also win out tax benefit wise.  $13 000 in grants on my education.  The free healthcare I receive.  The tax refunds I get on what I paid for my education.  The corporate tax benefits my employer gets which brought the company to Canada after it largely gave up on California.  Social safety nets.  All that cool stuff.

Nah, the real problem would be the farmers and cheese-mongers that it would effect. It was just a small joke, but several years ago there was an attempt to tax cheese in Wisconsin, it was voted down by something like a 95% to 5% margin, the FDA has changed policies regarding artisan cheese because of Wisconsin as well.

As a fun fact Wisconsin is the fourth largest producer of cheese in the world, when competing with countries.

thats usually due to price conversion and the actual economic growth of dollar vs euro if your buying international here in california we even have a Electronic Recycling Fee which is like the VAT but applies to larger electronics like tvs to help reduce the amount of electronic stuff that is put into the landfills etc

Some states have sales tax, which often apply to non-food items, or cooked/hot food items.

 

In Minnesota most foods aren't taxed but everything else such as PC parts, etc. are.

An example of cooked/hot food items would be McDonald's, grocery deli, etc.

 

In Minnesota the sales tax is 7.125%, some municipalities and counties may leverage a higher sales tax than 7.125%.

No VAT, just depends on state and local government.

Where I'm at, tax rate is about 6.5%.

Currently focusing on my video game collection.

It doesn't matter what you play games on, just play good games you enjoy.

And just to make things a tad bit more confusing, there are certain places where there are no sales tax flat out. Such as Base Exchange (retail store on military bases) or buying supplies at a University (faculty do not get taxed), when I buy my lunch from say Subway or my coffee from Starbucks, I pay no tax as long as I bought it on Campus. Same goes for technology and book items, I can buy a MacBook Pro through our computing department and get charged $0 in taxes. I can also go buy a pair of new shoes and a wrist watch from a Base Exchange and not be taxed (as an example).

We don't do VAT taxes in the US. Certain states have sales tax if they've passed it as a law.
