The biggest x86 launch for AMD in five years is today: Ryzen is here. As always before a major launch, AMD gives a ‘Tech Day’ for relevant press and analysts, and through this event AMD’s CEO, Dr. Lisa Su lifted the lid on one of the most anticipated products in the semiconductor industry. AMD knows how to control the level of enthusiasm for its fans, and today is the end result, with processors going on pre-order from major retailers today, ready for a general hard launch on March 2nd.

Quote

With a new processor launch, naming the parts and positioning them within the market is critical. So with Ryzen, the processor stack will be split into three based on performance and price: Ryzen 7 at the high end, Ryzen 5 in the middle, and Ryzen 3 for more price-conscious consumers. Both Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 3 are set to be launched later, and Ryzen 7 is the first portion of the family to be released.

Ryzen 7 will have three CPUs to start, all having eight cores and supporting simultaneous multi-threading:

Ryzen 7 1800X: 8C/16T, 3.6 GHz base, 4.0 GHz turbo, 95W, $499

Ryzen 7 1700X: 8C/16T, 3.4 GHz base, 3.8 GHz turbo, 95W, $399

Ryzen 7 1700: 8C/16T, 3.0 GHz base, 3.7 GHz turbo, $329

Ryzen 7 1800X will be the high-end part, featuring a base clock of 3.6 GHz and a turbo of 4.0 GHz, within a TDP of 95W, and for $499. Next to this is Ryzen 7 1700X, launching at $399, with a base/turbo of 3.4/3.8 GHz. The final part for the launch is the Ryzen 7 1700, providing eight cores and sixteen threads for $329 at 3.0/3.7 GHz frequencies.

Quote

Enthusiasts and analysts use the term IPC, or ‘Instructions Per Clock’, as a measure of how much the underlying microarchitecture improves from generation to generation. Two decades ago, a good design on a smaller node could net a healthy double-digit gain, whereas in recent years 5-10% gain has become the norm. When AMD initially announced that the new Zen microarchitecture they were developing was aiming for a 40% IPC gain, despite the low IPC they were starting from, users remained skeptical. AMD rehired Jim Keller to work alongside long-term AMD architect Mike Clark and produce a team with several goals in mind: high-performance x86, simultaneous multithreading, and a product to be relevant in the computing, PC, server and mobile space again. So despite this, 40% IPC always seemed a somewhat lofty goal, because Bulldozer was so underwhelming, and despite this low starting point. For the Ryzen launch today, AMD is stating that the final result of that goal is a 52% gain in IPC.

AMD's benchmarks showed that the top Ryzen 7 1800X, compared to the 8-core Intel Core i7-6900K, both at out-of-the-box frequencies, gives an identical score on the single threaded test and a +9% in the multi-threaded test. AMD put this down to the way their multi-threading works over the Intel design. Also, the fact that the 1800X is half of the price of the i7-6900K.

Quote

In a similar vein, again with the Cinebench 15 multi-threaded test, the Ryzen 7 1700X scores over and above the Core i7-6800K (its price competition) and higher than the Core i7-6900K which costs 2.5 times as much.

We’ll tell you what our benchmarks say, with official retail processors. But you will have to wait until March 2nd. Sorry.

52% IPC? So by the looks of the benchmarks Ryzen is slightly behind Broadwell ipc, so about Haswell or so. HOWEVER, those prices though! It seems all the leaks were real, and we really are getting an 8 core CPU for $330!!! Ryzen, it seems, is gonna completely shake up the CPU market wit amd pricing 8 core CPUs at 1/3 of the price they used to be!!! Holy crap!!!

The CPU market, it seems, is ready for a HUGE shake up now! What are you guy's thoughts?

EDIT: So I just watched the LTT Ryzen video, and it seems that the cooler these CPUs will ship with comes with RGB! I know some of you will say this is too much, but I think it's a great move. Tests have already shown the wraith is on par with the 212 evo in performance and is just a bit louder, so adding RGB means that for budget (ish) users they might not even need an aftermarket CPU cooler anymore! That's reall neat IMO and only adds to the Ryzen value proposition.

EDIT 2: Thanks to @SCGazelle, I've realized that it seems a lot of AM4 mobos have been listed on Newegg. You can't order them yet, but they are there. Most will be released within a week of March 2nd. The X370 boards seem to start around $160 but most are at least $200, so it's an X99 equivalent, and the B350 boards are priced around z170/z270. You can check the mobos out here.

EDIT 3:

So some of you have been intrigued by Ryzen 3 and 5 and are wondering when they are launching. Well it turns out that we now have some info on this (I haven't found anything coming directly from AMD but these pics seem to be of the actual event itself so I'm not too sure what to make of it).

Ryzen 3 and 5 Release Date Info

uizezu575khy.jpg

So it looks like we'll be getting Ryzen 5 before H2 of 2017! I'm guessing somewhere around Computex time would be likely but that's neat that it's coming soon!

Ryzen 3 won't be coming until H2 of 2017, though that doesn't surprise me much. AMD stated they would start with targeting the high end before and Ryzen 3 is much more mainstream so that makes sense. So if you're waiting for Ryzen 3, you probably should just buy an Intel CPU now unless you're willing to wait.

Ryzen 5 1600x Specs Confirmed!

db7f271801028073a83cafa1d5ca846956fc0be7e4654e603c92c5d676945609.jpg

So it looks like the 1600x is very much just a 6 core version of the 1800x. It has the same base and boost though I assume the cache is probably 3/4 that of the 1800x. For most high end ish builders, this will probably be the CPU to get since most likely it will be around $300 and most people don't need 8 cores. Unfortuantely this won't be out for a while but still, this is pretty cool!

EDIT 4: So thanks to @WMGroomAK, it looks like the new "Ryzen Master" overclocking software AMD might bundle with the Ryzen chips is leaked... It looks very similar to Wattman (which isn't a bad thing, mind you), with a nice design and decent options for overclocking. Here's a picture of it. 23070424129l.jpg

Well of course :D.

But cinebench already gives us a good idea of the approximate performance, so I wouldn't be surprised if the 1800x is basically the equivalent of the 6900k in games.

i hope no one complains "but its broadwell ipc". Its not like there were drastic changes in intels lineup. Ive got a 4970k that performs clock for clock with a 6700k I have.

Part of the reason why we need the market to be shaken to its core.

As others have stated... even though the hype is real, it's worth getting a larger user-base of benchmarks and reviews for better "real-world" testing. However this is still exciting and I might have to update one of my older PCs just for the hell of it!

I'm kinda more interested on the high end Ryzen 5s though, it would be nice to get a processor between an i5 and a i7.

So are the R7 chips the only ones being launched on March 2nd? If so, that's disappointing.

Yeah, the 4 and 6 core CPUs will have to wait, which kinda sucks since a 6 core 12 thread in the $250 range would've been awesome, but considering the value of these CPUs I'm not too sad.

Looks really promising!
