Nope, they broke the world record for 1800Xs, overclockers have achieved nearly 7GHz on 6950Xs....

nah they will be sitting on top teir silicon, they will have the top bins that overclock so it wont be appliable to what the avrage consumer can expect. Ryzen will likely have quite low binning criteria to keep the price down so its going to vary a lot

TBH, if it takes LN2 for 5.1GHz, I don't think that Ryzen will be the best overclocker....

Oh, ok makes sense now.  Yeah obviously nobody expected a 8/16 CPU to beat a 10/20 with similar clocks, that would be absurd.

At launch..?. I doubt that, it took 1.8V for 5.1GHz.... I think that it will overclock like Broadwell-E (4.2GHz-4.3GHz and 4.5GHz for the golden samples)

Well, overall they still fit nicely between intel's consumer and extreme lines. Maybe they don't overclock as well, don't have as many lanes, or quad channel support, but their price is far lower too. It's a great medium for a large portion of the market.

if the turbo of the Ryzen 1800X is 4GHz i doubt that you wont get 4.2GHz air and maybe water will be closer to 4.5GHz

I can't believe it's finally happening, we've all been waiting too long for this. AMD is a serious competitor to Intel again atlast. Definitely worth the wait, thank you AMD.

Is there any info on how big is the Ryzen silicon (in mm2)? It would be interesting to see how that compares to the Intel chips, and give us some perspective on how much Intel's prices can drop if needed.

Once we get the benchmarks from the independents, like LTT, Paul, Kyle and Jay etc, then I'll be more confident. 

 

However,  things do look very promising so far.

They can drop a lot: a large part of the cost of a CPU comes from developing it first, plus marketing and other overhead expenses. That cost is sunk, meaning it doesn't affect how low you can go: even if you lose money in total, it's still better to sell at any price above the marginal cost instead of simply giving up to your competitor (at least the chips you have. Manufacturing more is a different story, although you still don't want to leave an empty market to your rival - ask AMD ). I would expect Intel to remain a worse value, i.e., to price its CPUs somewhat above AMD for same performance, or give us less features or somewhat worse performance for the same price, etc., because of product differentiation, some exclusive feature, and mostly its current market position and brand image (plus long-term corporate supply deals).

 

I don't know what Intel was thinking about when they launched doped i3s at almost $180, but I could see entire segments collapsing or being transformed into something else.
