Guys I was only looking for a replacement for my R9 280X not an all out war between the 2 cards.

Get a 480.

Hey Everyone,

I'm deciding to upgrade my R9 280X 3GB Shortly for a few reasons.

Firstly its unstable as **** when updating the drivers which is very very annoying as I would like to get this system onto Windows 10 at some point (Did the upgrade when it was free but the graphics card's drivers were being updated constantly meaning that the card was about as stable as a cow riding a unicycle on jelly.

This is the XFX DD Version of the R9 280X so for some odd reason it will only run on the drivers which were included on the CD (06/12/2013 - 13.251.0.0). So when Windows 10 is installed it updates drivers automagicly which at the time I could not disable for love no money.

Secondly I want a 4GB or more Card as I can see games in the future needing this. Also would like to have the i5 4690K have a GPU it can take advantage of.

My Monitor is a 1080p Lenovo ThinkVision lt2223pwc so only 60htz running off Display Port (Finally upgraded from DVI).

So what would you recommend, don't want to spend a hell of a lot of money so no 1080's ect.

To be fair, the game is in "Early Access" yet has paid DLC. Did I mention that it's also an unoptimised piece of shit?

I'm not disputing the fact that the two cards trade blows. But Ark was a terrible example to use.

Thanks for your recommendations,

I've been looking at MSI's Offerings quite a bit as my Motherboard is from them too also I like the cooler's on them too, the RX 480 is Cheaper but has 2GB More of GDDR5 Memory so whats the kicker here?

Would rather go with the AMD Side of GPUs as my Motherboard only supports crossfire not SLI but still whats the real differences between these cards?

fair enough...but a blanket statement like ''RX 480 better in newer games GTX 1060 better in older games'' is completely irrelevant.

These cards perform about the same, and depending on the game engine one will be slightly better than the other...fire up another game and the other one will be slightly faster...pick your poison i guess.

AMD consume a bit more power...that's about it...software wise they are pretty even now...nvidia support physx (mostly irrelevant) it's really a case of whichever you like best honestly otherwise i would tell you.

Also, if your board only support crossfire it probably has the second PCIE slot running at pcie 4x speed which will have a slight impact on RX 480 crossfire performance...not the end of the world but i wouldn't really consider this has an option personally...just sell the card and buy a new one when you feel it's getting outpasted by newer titles.

As said, most older games/DX11 (GTA V, etc) are better on 1060

Newer/DX12 games are better on 480 (COD IW, DOOM, etc.)

''brand new game'' sniper elite 4 is built on an age old game engine, the same one they used for the past 3 sniper games...and it's very well optimized...same goes for dishonored 2 and watchdogs 2 both games use the same old game engine the previous ones were using so ''not optimized'' for those ''brand new games'' yeah sure...NO, these games ARE optimized already, because they are built upon 2+ years old tech.
