FX-8350 Bottlenecks my GTX 980?

The title explains it. I have a fx 8350 at 4.0ghz and a Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 980. I have been getting poor performance in games that I know this card can handle. In BF1 I frequently drop into the 50's and even 40's, same with Far Cry 4. All other games have this same problem. AMD Cool n' Quiet is turned off. Other forums that I have read have said that the 8350 does not bottleneck the 980. All help is appreciated. :D

Battlefield 1 is a very CPU intensive game, and that CPU is already pretty weak. in some games, it might not bottleneck, and at higher resolutions it wont bottleneck, but at 1080p it's a bottleneck sometimes

download MSI afterburner and monitor CPU and GPU usage. If CPU usage > GPU usage, you have a bottleneck

Nope that is not necessarily true. This is an (4 cores)8 threaded processor, it will only reach 100% in a rarity of games. I know because I have one.

Yes true but I still don't think a 980 will get it to reach a 100% except in a very select number of games.

The FX line of CPUs never were good for gaming (unfortunately).

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.

I would not necessarily say that. They were just behind the curve and Intel's sandy bridge was just leagues ahead. I would say for awhile the FX-6300 was the budget king CPU. 

 

The FX-8350 will Bottleneck a GTX 980 but in some titles it wont. The FX-8350 is still a decent enough processor to keep up at 1080p but it may not always allow for 60fps. If the games you are playing are heavily dependent on single core performance then the FX-8350 is gonna be a larger bottleneck. But in games like Witcher 3 the extra threaded performance helps out a bit.

 

Its worth noting that at some point removing any potential bottlneck is a ridiculous endeavor. An I5-7500 will get much better FPS than say the FX-8350 but an I7-7700k with 2400MHZ ram(and higher) will get more FPS than the 7500 in many titles. So its all dependent on what you value. If you have the money to upgrade when Ryzen launches it will give you better performance and less of a bottleneck. Otherwise you are happy with your performance then the bottleneck doesn't matter,

I have the same set up as you. And I can confirm that yes CPU can bottleneck the GPU in games.

I would recommend overclocking your CPU to 4.6 - 4.7 GHz if you have a very good air cooler and MOBO. 

If you have a water cooler and you have a good silicon you can hit with no prob 5GHz. 

I didn't have that much luck with silicon lottery and can hit max 4.7GHz with my NH-D14 air cooler and still have stability issues.

I managed to have it stable for some time and the difference was evident. 

Here is mine 3D mark score http://www.3dmark.com/fs/4092186 when I was overclocking back in 2015. But now I don't even have time to game because of school.

I have a Corsair H80i GT liquid cooler but I'm not comfortable overclocking that far because I only have a 600-watt power supply. I did have a 1000-watt power supply but it died on me this past weekend.

I understand. At this point it's not even worth buying a more powerful PSU.

Have you tried to disable turbo and set the clock speed to the same as the boost clock originally was or higher? :D

I did a test run of BF1 and the CPU and GPU were both hovering around 70% usage.

Turbo is disabled and clock speed is set to 4.2. No change in performance.

Do you expirence any bottleneck with your 8370 and 970? What type of frame rates do you get in modern AAA games suck as BF1?

BF1 I aim for 68fps and it rarely ever dip below that unless something insane happens, so it runs fine but Heroes of the Storm on the other hand struggles to hit 50... :( (I am not gonna say Ark or DayZ count currently due to them being unfinished and most say that run like crap...)

Yes it is bottlenecking for sure.. A 970 runs bf1 ultra no problems with a 6700K per example...

Even an i5 6600k struggle to keep smooth butter in bf1...

it sure does, i had an FX-8320 overclocked to 4.6ghz and it was still limiting the performance of my GTX 780 in many titles already...i can only imagine what it does to a GTX 980...

that's a bad misconception...in the case of the AMD FX...it has plenty of ressources, plenty of ''cores'' plenty of cache...it will rarely be maxed out, or even have 1 ''core'' maxed out...but it will bottleneck by SPEED...it's simply NOT fast enough to process all the informations quick enough to keep the GPU fed and keep the framerates high...so CPU load doesn't mean anything, because the CPU can simply be too slow to process fast enough to keep the graphics card happy, and this is what is happening here.

Yep. Check out where the 3770K stacks at, it was released the same year your 8350 came out. Based off that we can conclude the 8350's weak single core performance is limiting it in CPU demanding games where the 3770K performs better at handling these modern GPUs.
