Part advice for gaming PC

Franky22

  1. Budget & Location

    Europe (Austria) , the budget is about 1400 $US (1000€ – 1100€)

  2. Aim

Mainly gaming (games like Battlefield 4 or Assassins Creed 4)

  3. Monitors

    Currently just one (1080p)

  4. Peripherals

    I have all of these

  5. Why are you upgrading?

My computer is too weak for most of the new games and it is a preassembled one with a pretty small case.

I have already searched for components but I am not completely sure if they all fit together. Besides I have not decided on some parts yet so I am asking you especially for these components for your help and advice.

Here is my first approach:

CPU: Intel Core i7 – 3770k or Intel Core i5 – 2470

Video card: Asus GTX 770

Motherboard: No choice yet but maybe one from Asus or Gigabyte

RAM: No choice yet but about 8 GB

HDD: Western Digital blue 1TB

SSD: Samsung 840 120GB

PSU: No choice yet but modular if possible

Case: Fractal Design Arc Midi R2

Cooler: No choice yet

Thanks for any advice.

Kind regards.

If you're just gaming don't get an i7, an i5-3570k or i5-4670k will do fine, Asus generally makes the best motherboards, make sure you 2x4GB sticks of RAM, if you're unsure what CPU cooler to get just get a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo, it's the golden standard bang for your buck cooler.

If you choose a mother that is matx size meaning only 4 pcie slots you can run sli or crossfire x in the future although most people aim for atx which can have up to 6-7 pcie slots for dual or triple graphics card configurations with add ons such like a raid card/pcie capture card or even a sound card.

I could strech my budget but just if it is really necessary. Of course i will use this computer mainly for gaiming but isn't this videocard a little overkill?

(btw dont expect too much knowledge from my side. It is my first DIY PC)

So for your CPU do NOT get an i7, its a waste of money especially for gaming.
For the video card I would suggest a R9 280x from radeon. Or even a R9 290. Radeon cards get much better fps in BF4 than Nvidia, the game was designed for Radeon cards. Also, those two cards are about the same price as the 770 but have better performance.
As for your motherboard, dont think that the higher the price the better the quality because that can be false, and happens often. My friend was deciding between a $64 and $130 motherboard and through much research he found out there was no difference except for the overclocking abilities.
RAM: Get your RAM from either Gskill, specifically ripjaw. Or from Corsair or Kingston.
PSU: This is the PSU I have and it is amazing. Full modular and very cheap for being so. http://www.newegg.co...N82E16817341052

Depending on the game, BF4 and Crysis 3 will fully use it. Also other GPU you could get is 280X, but this is way more powerful.

I agree, even maybe a 290 or even a 290x for the price of the 780.

290X is much more expensive and both use reference coolers, what is unacceptable.

Here the 780 costs €440-450, 290X costs €500+ and the 290 is €370-400.

I think the 290x isn't within my budget.
So i did some research for the 780 and the 290. With some interesting results:
The 290 costs like you said before about 380€ which is a lot cheaper than the 780 (about 460€). The AMD one also has slightly better performences than the 780. The only disadvantage is that the 290 quickly gets hot and the cooler isn't quiet too.
However, I think i will take the 290.

Wonderful choice! When do you think youll be ordering the parts because non reference design coolers may be released by then

If you're not in a hurry, I'd recommend waiting for aftermarket 290's before planning your build.

I am not in a hurry. I will buy the parts in a few weeks.
For the CPU I will probable take the Intel Core i5-4670k.
I am really unsure which Motherboard I should take. Someone already recommended one from Gigabyte but first I would prefer one from asus also was that recommended one a bit too expensive. I estimate with about 100€ (130$) or less.

Dont think a board is bad because its cheap.
