this news is sort of old at this point and didn't really want to make a thread about it originally cause crowd funding, but since this section as become a bore infested fuck fest due to the coming of a new chip plus the fact that this isn't this company's first attempt and the first one wasn't even half bad and the success of this campaign, might as well

 

GPD the company you should remember for the launch of the GPD Win 5.5 portable PC console

As decided to crows source a new device, this time though not gaming focused. The GPD Pocket is a 7" PC that is touch enabled, sports an Intel atom x7-Z8700 CPU (bumped to Z8750), 4GB of RAM (originally, now will come with 8GB due to the success of the campaign), 128GB of storage, a type-C AND a USB-A port (*cough* Apple *cough*), mini HDMI out, micro SD slot a courage port headphone jack, and a 7000mAh battery.

Just like the Win, this device doesn't come with a trackpad and instead of a joystick simulating mouse movement it will have a trackwheel/nub:

And due to the lack of the gaming interfaces, what looks to be a much better keyboard.

This device sort of hits a sweet spot for me since i used to have a Sony Vaio P way back when, for who don't remember i'm talking about this:

 

GPD asked for 200k$ through indiegogo, surpassed got 700k$ in the first 24 hours, reached 1M$ on sunday, and, as of writing this, has amassed 1392106$ from more than 3000 backers and still has 2 months to go.

The system will come with Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (bit of stats: out of the 3000 backers, 500 picked the Ubuntu version).

 

Overall i'd say i'm genuinely impressed, if GPD manages to deliver like they did with the Win this could actually decent device with many use cases, for example the one brought out by Linus with the Win: to use it as a teamviewer machine. And if the keyboard feels good even better!

 

The pocket will cost 599$ and supporters can order it now for 399$.

Nice post, nice to see something else with the wave of RYZEN reposts :P.

Device looks cool, can't imagine what it could be useful for though.

Seems like it's too big to be fit in most's pockets but too small to comfortably use the keyboard.

Only thing that would make me happier is if they did dual boot Linux + Windows

you can grab the W10 model and set it up in your own

But I prefer it happen at the factory since we don't know what hardware will be in it, if I have to get proprietary drivers, etc

I remember that Sony P, and here is the one from way back, Vaio C1

One I like the most is the Vaio TR. A 10.6" packed with the best hardware of its time and a integrated optical drive. If something was still made like this today, then it would a 10.6" running on a Core i7. Both this and the C1 has swivel cameras.

Gah, Sony used to be so imaginative. I still love the VAIO UX (the one with the slide up keyboard and the Core 2 Solo!) 

 

I heard of a forum where they managed to cram a Core 2 Duo into one.. Ahhh, old times.

IMO, they make the best looking laptops of all time. Each of them has its own type of attractiveness.

The old Z line has a 13" Ultrabook with a 35/45W i7 quad-core. 

That's insane, and it was a beautiful machine.

Seems like such a strange decision to remove the joysticks and buttons. It's giving up their niche in favor of a totally different market.

That's insane, and it was a beautiful machine. 

Aesthetically it left a little bit to be desired, but it's an engineering marvel. It's like 1/2 an inch thick and has 3 fans. It's a really impressive piece of machinery, i regret not getting one when they were on sale dirt cheap ~ a year and a half ago.

I love the idea of these things, but I'm not sure I feel the need for such a device when there are plenty of compact laptops out there with probably more powerful hardware. I mean sure they don't fit in your pocket, but when my pocket is all I can use I'm sure I can survive with my smartphone.

7000mah battery and it's just a tad thicker than an iPhone... TAKE NOT EVERYONE. Also I would love a mini PC in my pocket. This is one of the reasons I jailbreak iphones. Nothing beats having a full Unix terminal in your back pocket

that the point, this isn't supposed to be a gaming focused device like the Win

now combine that with a decent keyboard (hope that it is decent) and you get a nice tool overall. I don't fund stuff  as a rule i set for myself, but hopefully it comes to fruition; would definitely put this above getting a chromebook on my "things to get" (ubuntu model for me) list
