The 950M is only HDMI 1.4. In the 900M series, only the 970M and 980M have HDMI 2.0.

When I research HDMI speeds for 1.4 can't find the output speed (anywhere).

Try the thread pinned at the top of this section (if you're on desktop), select HDMI in the first dropdown.

Unless you're hooking up to a 4k display or something like a 1440p 144hz monitor it shouldn't matter.

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

Do this:

And make sure you do it by hitting the quote button at the bottom left of my post, and not the one inside the editor!

Speeds? What do you mean?

Depends on the model, although unless you're shooting for 4k it shouldn't really matter anyways.

he means like max Hz and resolution

i don't know how much of that speed you can use with a 950M since I only get 120 fps at 1080p with high settings on my rx 480

I doubt your laptop has 2.0 unless it's new (within the last year) and at least relatively high end, which I doubt with a 950m. You're probably going to need an HDMI to DisplayPort adapter if you don't already have the port

the displayport will still be limited by the hdmi input speeds

Could you tell us what laptop you have? Because otherwise it's kinda hard to tell you if you have hdmi 1.4 or 2.0...

There are multiple different HP pavilion gaming laptops out there. There are ones with skylake, Kaby lake, and probably Broadwell i5s and i7s as well as ones with GTX 1050s in there. "HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop" is very unspecific. Without the exact specifications and screen size I really can't do anything.
