Scorpio console.

creepybob

I JUST got a gtx 1070 and Microsoft releases details of project scorpio. I realized that they where marketing to the pc master race in the advertisement for it, saying stuff like "6 teraflops of computing power", stuff that only a pc gamer would understand. i just wanted to know how scorpio would compare to my pc because i just spent a lot of money on it.

Probably considerably worse. The 6 teraflops is most likely on a Polaris GPU so the performance would probably be similar to an rx 480. Teraflops don't mean anything unless you're comparing two GPUs based on the same architecture.

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

we still don't know much about project scorpio, other than the ESRAM and the "road to 4K" methodology MS is planning

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2017-the-race-to-4k-how-scorpio-targets-ultra-hd-gaming

i think it was confirmed that an infodump of sorts is planned in E3 this year

i wouldn't worry too much though, because Xbox Play Anywhere is a huge possibility going forward

Terraflops on gpus is the marketing equivalent of DPI in mice.

Can it indicate a strong performing gpu? Oh, hell yeah.

Should it actually be used as a metric for comparison between two products? Oh, hell no.

Just like DPI ratings on mouse packaging you should pretty much ignore it entirely and look at actual real-world performance metrics.

From the very little we do actually know for sure, it will likely fall into a mid-ranged gaming computer range. Though... considering that microsoft is marketing it as a "Premium" product, it will likely cost just about as much as one of those gaming rigs, if only a touch less.

Yup. Since the 480 is around 5.8 Tflops, it will likely be some form of Polaris-based APU with maybe 4 Ryzen cores

I'm not expecting it to be a true 4k consoles and closer to what the ps4 pro does. Even AMD's most expensive CPU/GPU have only recently crossed the playable 4k threshold.

Unless they make this thing dirt cheap, I wouldn't even bat an eye.

And?

That doesn't change anything I said. The only real thing microsoft has been saying about the performance is vague mumblings of 4k and a rough 6 teraflops of performance, which mean virtually nothing.

If you're still concerned about how it will perform compared to your machine, then don't worry.

Unless microsoft pulls a 1080 degree turn out of their asshole and releases the scorpio at around $999.99, then it won't even come close to what your 1070 rigged machine can manage.

480 can handle it when paired with an i5 6400, so I guess it's a maybe. It's got 12GB RAM, confirmed by MS, so maybe 4GB system 8GB video?

Maybe. But I think it will be real 4K, not PS4 Pro bullshit. The FPS will probably range from 30-45 in some games with drops to like 20 or less

Scorpio is going to use a piece of shit Jaguar cpu just like XBone, PoorStation 4, and PoorStation 4 Pro, so it's going to be a 30 fps gaming system. So your PC with an i5 and a GTX 1070 is far superior. Scorpio won't be in the same ballpark because of the massive cpu bottleneck. I doubt the gpu will stack up well to the 1070 also.

To add to this...

The GTX 1060 6GB is rated for ~3.5 TFLOPS of FP32 performance. The RX 480 8GB is rated for ~5 TFLOPS of FP32 performance. So how come the RX 480 isn't killing the GTX 1060?
