PWM Fan faulty?

Teddy07

Hello,

I have bought 4 Artic F14 PWM PST fans and one of them is faulty because he is always at max. speed no matter what I do. Yes, it is in the correct slot plugged in and i have tested it on 2 different mainboards. All the others work fine.

Here is the link to the manufacturer if needed: https://www.arctic.ac/de_en/catalog/product/view/id/499/s/arctic-f14-pwm-pst/category/14/

I do not quite get how this is possible. Do they have some kind of electronic inside that can be damaged?

I thought it is just a fan so it can not really get faulty.

Have you tried plugging the fan into a system fan header, which is voltage controlled? If the PWM portion is broken, you should at least be able to use it voltage controlled.

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

What motherboards and headers are you plugging the fan into?
Does swapping out this fan with another working one result in the same issue?

If you ever need help with a build, read the following before posting: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/

I plugged it into the CPU fan connector in both motherboards and it always ran at max. speed because I could not control it.

Funny thing is: I connected my fans through a chain with the CPU fan connector and all fans slow down as intended but this one seems to be always at 100% speed. It doesn't matter if I change the position in the chain or connect it alone.

--> So it must be broken, but I am not sure how it is possible. I thought my mainboard tells the fan to slow down.

The problem is: I can not slow the fan down below 50% in the system fan header. I rather send this one back and get a new one. I specifically bought these fans to be able to customize their speed.

Yeah perhaps whatever part of the fan that takes the pwm signal and then uses it to control the fan speed is broken :/. You probably should just replace it then.
