Japan's AI supercomputer, Tsubame 3.0

Tokyo Institute of Japan is getting awesome system this summer called the Tsubame 3.0, an AI supercomputer that will be powered by Nvidia Tesla P100 gpu accelerators. This new machine will double the performance of its predecessor the Tsubame 2.5. Nvidia Tesla P100 are capable of producing 12.2 petaflops of double precision performance. The machine will be able to output more than 47 PFLOPs of computing power, and when it's combined with its predecessor Tsubame 2.5, together it can churn out a total of 67 PFLOPs, making it Japan's fastest AI supercomputer. When it's completed it will be used for education and research. It will also be available for use by researchers in the private sector.

It does indeed say that, it even mentions PFLOPS couple of times, so it is not a spelling error or anything like that.

Not sure why they mentioned petaflops and then PFLOPs, are they both the same thing?  12.2 petaflops, I was expecting that to say up to 47exaflops not PFLOPs.

I think they are the same thing 10 ^15.

Exaflops = EFLOPS 10^18.

Must be a typo. Tesla P100 is actually only 5.3 TERAflops in DP. They might be referring to something like the DGX-1 boxes which have 8 P100s (42 Tflops DP). Maybe they have a unit with two P100s + a CPU which adds up to the 12.2 Tflops. If the whole computer is 47 petaflops then there is likely somewhere around 8,800 P100s (ignoring CPUs, probably less once you account for those).

I was trying to count how many of Tesla P100's you would need to get to that number.

But I do think that the 47 PFLOPS refers to the overall performance.

Did some reading, 47.7 Petaflops refers to half precision. 12.15 petaflops of peak double precision and 24.3 petaflops single precision.

i doubt it, the private sector has access to it.

This would be a Public Private Partnership (PPP) realising that the governmental structure in Japan is different to that of other countries. With its "Kabuki economics" and companies like Toshiba that are actually Japanese multinational conglomerates which have many products and services across a wide gamut of "Public Infrastructure". Not saying that Japan is NOT a democracy but those that wield power and influence are not always who you think (a good example currently would be the new Trump administration).

Facebook's new Menlo Park Campus building 20 in Menlo Park, California...it is a research facility too.

 

That goes without saying that the Tsubame 3.0 is an awesome machine, with that much compute power it will no doubt create new inroads in areas that I do not fully comprehend. But it is just the "devil's advocate" I am playing out here as I can see that we may never really know what exactly it will be doing or of its capabilities unless of course you have a math problem and you have Tsubame access?

 

It is exactly like @raphidy suggested, though, it would make a useful anime render tool.
