Monitors Technology

hiimFred

Hello guys, how's life treating you? Your Greek friend here, so sorry for my bad English in advance!

To the point.

I am thinking, since I have bought my new rig ( https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/183-show-off-your-setup/?do=findComment&comment=9367355 ) for a few months now, maybe I should start saving some money to invest to a new monitor. I am still rocking an 8 years old LG FullHD panel :P

I have some concerns though. I admittedly know VERY few things about monitors and monitors' technologies. I only know a thing or two about hardware.

1. I have an EVGA GTX 1070 FTW. This card is supposed to be the sweet spot, the perfect choice, for 1440p gaming. But will it be powerful to run games at High-Ultra details, 3 years from now, at 1440p at playable frames (40+)? I think the point is, should I invest in a 1440p monitor?

2. When is the new leap in monitors' technologies coming (new panel types, HDR monitors etc)? How is it called, and is it worth waiting? Or should I just invest in an IPS panel?

3. I do not care about fast response times that much. I prefer a monitor with nice colors, good picture quality etc. (IPS>TN imo)

Edit:  This post is not a "What to buy" guide. It's mostly a "should I invest right now, or wait for new technologies" kind of thing.

@Abyssal Radon Hello friend, and thanks for the reply.

My budget should be about 350-500 Euros. 350 being the starting point with something like a Dell U2515H.

But this post is not a "What to buy" guide. It's mostly a "should I invest right now, or wait for new technologies" kind of thing.

Unless you are doing a lot of content creation or content consumption I don't think you'll see much benefit in getting a HDR monitor. I would just get a 1440p monitor now. Other than HDR, I can't think of anything you should wait for. I know you aren't looking for help finding one, but if you do, let me know. Good Luck!

Quick Question: What are is the monitor for?

@SCGazelle Hello friend! The monitor is for gaming (I do have a thing with open world games with great graphics like The Witcher 3, GTA 5, Deus Ex etc...), casual browsing and movies. Maybe some content creation in the future, but nothing professional. I also want it to look beautiful on my desk. So bezels must be almost non-existent (that's why I'm digging Dell alot). :P Any thoughts on Amoled and VA panels?

@Thread212 Hello, yes that's what I'm thinking too! Just a beautiful IPS panel will do for now. What's your thoughts on Amoled and VA panels though?

Samsung's new VA panels with quantum dots have the best picture quality. These panels have  125% sRGB, 3000:1 contrast ratio, great black levels, very little BLB and most importantly they manage to solve VA's greatest shortcoming - slow pixel transitions. Of course they have downsides like worse viewing angels and gamma shift. All of these monitors are FHD except

Samsung C34F791

, but it is expensive.

Samsung CH711  is about to be released soon and hopefully will be in your price range.

Wow, thanks @Kompira, maybe by the time I will move forward with the purchase this monitor will be available. The C34F791 is indeed expensive for someone like me, but that's some helpful information you gave me!:)
