RX 460 or GTX 1050 for non gamer

Abdullahseba

Hi
I am pondering between the GTX 1050 (£109) and the RX 460 (£90) or the RX 460 4GB (£104).

I use my computer for CAD, 3D and video editing.

I don't game except for light games that wont see a difference between the three GPU's such as Tanki.

I also want to run three 4k monitors.

What do you guys think will suite my needs best?

Thanks in advance.

Rx 480 is more powerful than the 1050 (Pretty much a 750ti) and the RX460

Pretty sure the 1050 will have better compatibility with most of the programs you use.

Also your title says 480 and your post says 460, one of them is wrong.

Says 480 in title. Would get a 1050 over a 460. Don't know how well 3 4k will workout for you.

I would consider the AMD side, this is because it contains 10Bit colour support, so i assume, this may be  more useful considering you are not a gamer but might be a content creator.

pretty sure 1080 supports 10bit so 1050 should though its not well documented.

1050 is more like a 950/960 ish in terms of performance tbh.

If all you are looking for is something that can support 3 4k displays, try looking for a 270/370 on ebay. I have been looking, and you can find the 2GB model around $80.

I have no experience with non Nvidia GPUs but the GTX 1050 would allow you to CUDA hack Premiere Pro for a slight edge if that matters to you.

GTX 1050 (ti).

4k does not need 4gb Vram, since it's just the Desktop.

But the GTX 1050 is already faster than the RX 460 2gb or 4gb. Around 20~% faster.

The GTX 1050 ti is again 20-30% more faster., since it has more cores.

GTX 1050 ti is pretty much a GTX 960 4gb performance level.

GTX 1050(ti) also consume less power, than the RX 460.

If you want triple 4K, it might be better to step up to a GTX 1060 or RX 470. Most GTX 1050 and RX 460 I've seen only have 1 DP 1.3/1.4, 1 HDMI 2.0 and 1 DVI. That's only good for dual 4K.

@Sugadaddy is right.... you would need a RX 470 Minimum...

doesn't DVI provide HDMI 2.0 then?

DVI is a mixture of VGA and HDMI

  • 11 months later...

Reviving old posts insint really my thing, but i feel the need to post.

in terms of raw power the 1050 ti stands out, its great for gaming. in terms of editing how ever its a different story.

i have editing video on both the rx 460 , rx 480 and the 1050 ti. on all graphic cards mentioned i saw no problems or differences, the only differences i saw was in render times with the rx 460 being slightly slower than the rx 480 and the gtx 1050ti being considerably slower for example, 1 video 5 minutes long, same video rendered on all of the graphic cards, rx 460 = 3:21. rx 480 = 3:11. gtx 1050ti = 11:42. done this multiple times, in fact it seemed that over time frame of 3 weeks my gtx 1050ti got worse where it was rendering videos for 30 minutes. simply changing back to my rx 460 which i luckily still had bought the render time down to 3 minutes.

however:

when playing games it was a whole new story, i was getting around 15-20 fps boost using the 1050ti in a few games such as battlefield one, and rust.
