480 8GB vs 1060 GB

Doppey

Right now i have the chance to buy a  MSI - RX 480 ARMOR 8G OC for 203$ ( Taxes already included ) or a  Zotac GeForce GTX 1060 6G  for 223$ (Tax included) and ive seen so many benchmarks that im not sure anymore which one to buy. The main game i play is Overwatch in which the 1060 is a good amount of frames ahead but i know ( or think ) that the 480 does well in DX12 games and is probably the more future proof choice. The Overwatch fps though :(

4808GB>1060GB  lol joking about your typo aside I'd personally choose the 480

They are pretty much on par with each other, the actual performance delta will depend on which games you play. IMO, get the one you can find cheapest

i suggest a 480, it can do 1080p 60 fps also the drivers are improving.

Only reason why the 480 is performing better now than at released is AMD released it with drivers to utilize about 80% of its performance, whereas Nvidia was already at 95%. AMD has done this with previous cards as well. Now, since AMD has improved its drivers so much, the 480 is the way to go, although, the 1060 6GB can do 1080p 60fps (and 1440p 60fps) no problem as well. They are dead even in DX 11 games and AMD has a 5-8% in DX 12 games. Not enough to make a die hard team green or team red jump ship, but for unbiased people, either or is a winning card.

I found that the 1060s are a lot more overclockable, most being able to overclock to 2ghz or higher while the 480s run at around 1.2ghz, thoghts?

1060 has 4.4 tflops while the 480 has 5.5 tflops so yes in theoretical performance the 480 is much better.

I have a xfx Rx 480 8gb and it is the best budget oriented graphics card I've owned. It has hard swap fans as well (so if you have a black and red build you can change the led) The 1060 is very nice as well however, there's less VRAM, although that won't really start effecting your games for a couple more years most likely. Direct x 12 is soon to be supported by ninvida so it's honestly up to how much you want to spend. Also what processor you have.

Frequency doesn't matter, same with CPUs. GTX 1060 6GB get around a 400MHz boost from 1.7GHz to 2.1GHz (at the high end), and same with the RX 480, from a 1100MHz clock to 1400MHz (at the high end, again)

Still not 100% true, since the performance will depend more on optimization from the devs than the API used.

API's are not generally developed by GPU manufacturers

You're forgetting that, TFlops are calculated the same, but the performance of each TFlop is very different.

Thats like saying a R9 390X at 5.9TFlops is much better than both a 1060 and 480, but in reality, it is worse.

I'd personally get the 1060 6GB. More reliable, and uses less power.

Yes, RX 480 can beat the 1060 in some games; but to me, Nvidia is better to last for the future.

Until at least Vega comes out. That should be bring GPU prices down, and hopefully kick Nvidia in the ass to put more performance in each generation.

Vulcan was not made by AMD, it was made by Khronos.

Personal build >  New-ish AMD main gaming setup

PLEASE QUOTE OR @ ME FOR A RESPONSE xD

Same for Ryzen. We as consumers really need more competition on the market

There is no telling in which either companies will pull out of their ass the driver update card but for now the 480 has the edge, though I haven't heard most positive results about relive (mostly being complaints of it always being broken)

Freesync is also cheaeper which is good if you are going to get a monitor with some srot of sync

DX12 and vulkan also being better than the 1060 so far.

Yes its hotter, and less Power Efficent, Yes it isn't the best at OCing, but mhz does not mean everything.
