AMD CPU Cooler stuck at max RPM

Keg Ops
Go to solution Solved by Organized,

I have the same motherboard and it's not capable of controlling 3 pin fans (voltage regulator is missing). You should change your CPU cooler, I had an Alpenföhn Brocken Eco on my FX-8350 and it was fine without overclocking. It's also cheap.

Hi!

I recently got a new computer that has an ASUS M5A97 R2.0 motherboard and an AMD FX-8350 processor. However, no matter what program I use, or I when I try to go into the bios, my fan is stuck at max speed. I've heard some motherboards just allow cpu fans to go at max speeds, so is this true here?

I would say all motherboards let the CPU fan go at full RPM. The question is if under the hardware monitoring tab in the BIOS if it'll let you turn it down. If it's a AM3+ compatible motherboard that should be an option. You just have to find it.

The FX series uses a lot of power, meaning your going to have more haet, the stock fan may just need to run at max to keep your CPU cool.

Do you have a 4pin PWM connector connected to the 4 Pin PWM header on the motherboard?

I don't know what that is, but  a picture of the cooler and cable. I tried playing around in the BIOS for a little bit but had no luck. I was able to turn down the chassis fan but not the CPU fan.

Thats hard pic to say anything about cable. Why not take it off and see for yourself? PWM has 4pins, non-PWM has 3pins. It might be this cooler http://www.deepcool.com/product/cpucooler/2013-12/7_119.shtml In which case fan is only 3pin and needs to be set for voltage/DC control instead of PWM.

It looks like he is using this cooler:

@Kek Ops

If that IS what it is, the fan is only a 3-pin.

You either:

  1. Cannot control the fan speed at all (since it is not a 4-pin fan) or,
  2. You need to set your BIOS (or some kind of software) to control the fan speed by adjusting the voltage going to the fan (max speed is 12V, low speed is 5V, etc).

You are right. The pic was really confusing, I didn't realize those were RAM sticks on right side :/ But the points stands that fan is 3pin.
