Air Vs Liquid

theminnesotanman

For my first PC build i have been recommended to do an AIO cooler by very many people, but I have also gotten people who say that air will do just fine as long as i dont mind about size/ looks as much. I am going for a black box computer so looks have no meaning to me. I do not foresee myself overclocking a huge amount (I will be going with a i7 7700k). I strictly want to know 1. How much more performance will i get out of an AIO vs an Air cooler and 2. What is a solid Air cooler in the $50-$70 price range. (The AIO i was looking at was the H100i v2)

Unless you have a 10-core CPU you will not get better performance. water cooling can only outperform an air cooler if the surface area of the radiator is greater than what you can get with an air cooler. Look for the sandwich design, the phanteks cooler might be in that price range

Noctua NH-D9L 46.4 CFM CPU Cooler

Its about $53 and you could get some extra fans to push or pull the air around in your case for enchanced air cooling

Cooler master hyper 212 evo is one of the best coolers, and it's quite cheap.

And a little too weak for an overclock 7700k. It can't keep up with my 8c Xeon even at 2.6GHz.

What kind of temps are you getting and have you tried reseating your cooler? The 212 Evo should be plenty for a e5-2670.

@theminnesotanman Where are you shopping/located?

Yeah reseated and replaced the thermal compound. Idles around 50C, at the moment I have about 6 tabs in Chrome, a download and a Youtube video and I'm at 59 degrees. I do have the BCLK at 107, but I'm at like 1.12V. Max I've seen is up to 70 degrees.

That's plenty of thermal headroom--I don't see the problem?

It should really idle in the mid 40's, and I did come from an FX 8320 @4.2GHz, so anything above 60ish seems really hot to me.

It may be due to the oc. Does reverting the settings to stock lower your idle temps?

I've actually never tried :P It's running at very slightly lower voltage than stock. Meh, if you say it's fine it probably is. I'm just used to things running much cooler.

@WoodenMarker I live in the US. I have a microcenter close by but i would prefer to buy online. I just wants a solid cooler for a decent price.

Depending on how much you want to spend, the best value coolers are probably:

PR Slim: http://pcpartpicker.com/product/hyQRsY/be-quiet-pure-rock-slim-351-cfm-cpu-cooler-bk008

Kotetsu: http://pcpartpicker.com/product/7998TW/scythe-cpu-cooler-scktt1000

Fuma: https://www.amazon.com/Scythe-SCNJ-4000-Ninja-Cooler-Heatsink/dp/B017S3ZJNY/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1487134813&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=scyteh+fuma

@WoodenMarker  So all of those only come with one fan. Will that provide enough cooling or would adding another fan help?

Adding another fan won't make much of a difference unless it's to make up for lack of airflow at very low rpms.

Im sorry. I was referring to the Scythe cooler.

Both the Kotetsu and Fuma are from Scythe.

The Kotetsu should clear the dimm slots completely and the Fuma should allow for slightly taller than standard profile.
