Intel Announces the New Halo Xeon Processor for World Domination

i love the fact that i goes from 64GB max ram to 1,5TB max in one step

It's actually a step of a family of processors, but yeah it's pretty dramatic. Basically a 'datacentre' processors start here.

If you call 60MB Cache basic...

But yes ideed seems a bit bold with 20 cores disabled..

I just can't not laugh when picturing a massive 24 core die all dead and four little guys chugging it off in the corner.

It's not really comparable because it's 4 desktop parts glued together.  They're going to have the same performance optimization issues as a 4S Xeon system would even though it's 1S.  Move up to 2S and you have to test your code as though it were going to an 8S system, which pretty much no one wants to deal with.

actually , no . An MCM is much different than multi-socket . They got infinity fabric linking all the parts together. I also heard it might be  a dual 16 core part , not a quad 8 core part.

think of it like the pentium D or early core 2 Quad's , except they are using buses that were designed with MCM's in mind , unlike FSB.

No, the low core parts will almost always be a separate product fabbed with lower core counts to begin with.  No sense disabling 24 cores to get a 4 core part when you can just fab an 8 or 12 core part instead and fit more on the wafer.

As @AnonymousGuy said those Xeons are based on different architectures. E3 Xeons use the same architecture as the desktop processors hence 64GB max, 16 PCIe lanes and DMI where E5 Xeons use the larger server architecture. The difference between E3 and E5+ Xeons is massive, not even worth comparing :P.

Edit:

Oh now I see the one you guys were probably talking about, E7-8893v4. Yea that is weird, far as I know there is no smaller die with that few cores with that much cache.

Intel has formally announced eleven processors between the 4S and 8S families, varying in core count, frequency, power consumption and L3 cache. The design of the HCC core is such that a processor can have certain cores fused off but the rest of the die can have access to the L3 cache, providing some SKUs with more ‘total cache per core’, such as the E7-8893 v4 which will be a four-core design but with 60 MB of L3 cache between them. These are classified by Intel as 'segment optimized', where applications require faster cache rather than more cores.

Looks like 20 cores are fused off, LOL wtf.

i kind of expected more PCIe lanes, but then again people who buy this are likely going to put more than one in a single system.

So the most basic 4 core version will be $4000? Did I read that right?

Those chips support multiple sockets and boat loads of RAM.
