Intel Announces the New Halo Xeon Processor for World Domination

http://www.anandtech.com/show/11121/intel-xeon-e7-8894-v4-cpu-24c-48t-9000-usd

Quote

The flagship Intel Xeon E7-8894 v4 processor features the Broadwell-EX XCC (extreme core-count) die and has 24 cores with Hyper-Threading technology, 60 MB of L3 cache, 165 W TDP, a default frequency of 2.4 GHz and a turbo frequency of up to 3.4 GHz.

So it's a 200Mhz boost from the previous flagship Xeon E7-8890 v4. That's a 9% improvement in performance for a 24% (or $1724) price increase.

Looks like Intel's sluggish march forward continues, AFAIK there's been no mention of Ryzen server class products so Xeon looks to remain unchallenged on the server CPU front until ARM can match its raw power.

So the most basic 4 core version will be $4000? Did I read that right?

I'm guessing that $4k price tag is for the low end quad core.

$1k per core!

Idk, that's gotta be a typo, on the 2nd screenshot the 18/36 version is $4600.

Actually seems like the most advanced 4 core.....

One of the highest clocks of the servers and still has 60MB of L3 cache.

Everything looks the same as the flagship except the core count. Notice the others climb in cache and clock speeds.

I still agree with you though, they just wanted the brag rights to the most expensive quad core xD lmao

EDIT: looking back I agree with RKReiley. Could be a simple typo

for the E7s, yes. But that's because the die cost is very similar across the board for those - they do come with extra features tho.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

If you call 60MB Cache basic...

But yes ideed seems a bit bold with 20 cores disabled..

The 2nd screenshot wasn't there when i made that initial post, I can now say its far from a basic quad core xD

Still seems very very highly priced though. I wonder if anyone would actually buy it, and what specific use cases it could have.

Haha yeah It's a massive die (although cut down) with 3x QPI, 60MB and PCiE 32x so it definitely takes up a lot of space on a 300mm2 wafer and such costs a bunch to manufacture. Especially because all of the cache has to work on this SKU and it takes up a lot of the chipspace. Very likely most or all of the cores work they are just disabled.

It's an enterprise chip but I agree margins are way up there! Haha

I have no clue which kind of workload such a chip would be needed for and who would buy this.

AMD server zen processor is Naples, no? Russians and Chinese are also cooking up home grown components with the annual rumor of the rise of Old techs in the server work place always being good for some clickbait.

Christ they're getting greedy.

This is server class hardware , which always has incredibly high margins . Both amd and nvidia also do it ( amd to a lesser extent because they don't have the fastest parts ) .

This was expected if anything.

No, the low core parts will almost always be a separate product fabbed with lower core counts to begin with.  No sense disabling 24 cores to get a 4 core part when you can just fab an 8 or 12 core part instead and fit more on the wafer.

It's not really comparable because it's 4 desktop parts glued together.  They're going to have the same performance optimization issues as a 4S Xeon system would even though it's 1S.  Move up to 2S and you have to test your code as though it were going to an 8S system, which pretty much no one wants to deal with.
