Serious Sam 4 will use the Vulkan API

OC3d just released an article telling us that Croteam is updating their games with vulkan APi.

Croteam has announced that Serious Sam 4 will use the Vulkan API, with Vulkan and VR updates coming to Serious Sam 1-3 and The Talos Principle.
 
These updates will be changing all games in the Serious Fusion 2017 series into 64-bit titles with support for Multi-threaded rendering, multi-monitor support and offer many improved rendering features. All games will also be updated to offer mod support and support for Steam cloud saves and co-op support for both VR and Non-VR (flat) gamers. 
 
Using the Vulkan API all of these games will support Linux, SteamOS, OSX and Windows, offering the high-performance levels that modern graphical API's offer and lacks the OS exclusivity that DirectX 12 provides. The Serious Fusion 2017 update will also remove the DirectX 9 code paths from the game, though all of these game already include OpenGL support for use with older hardware configurations.

Seems like vulkan api is picking up some followers :-)

And they are updating existing titles with is awesome.

It is made by Croteam, which were among the first (if not the first) to implement Vulkan in The Talos Principle, so wasn't this kind of expected? Mind you, we have seen in Doom that OpenGL has come a long way, so I don't see anything wrong with removing DX, if it performs as well. 

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

Talos Principle is great, but Serious Sam 3 was terrible... 

 

Games on Vulkan +4 (excluding Talos), people using Vulkan ~0% (net change).

 

What would be awesome is if Apple support the Vuklan API on iOS, macOS, and tvOS... They are part of the Kronos Group after all.

its 5 Games, which is good, it will take time for it to pick up speed tho

SS3 was pretty good in my opinion, it did what it was supposed to do. Not the multiplayer though, that wasn't very well thought out (which is weird considering the franchise roots).

I think Apple would provide support for Vulkan on at least macOS. I think they're just taking some time on how to put it into the OS, I guess if that's how it should be phrased?

Seeing it on iOS would probably be a crapshoot though.

This is great. I know they were one of the first to implement it but they are sticking to it and continuing use of it

Man, my "automatic buy" principle for Vulkan games is hurting me more than helping me, was bored by SS3 from start to finish and wasn't planning on buying any sequel.

Really nice, I remember when it was announced that The Talos Principle will support Vulkan back then. Glad they're doing API progress. DOOM with Vulkan runs awesome!

that was the case initially but it was an alpha release and they continually patched it. Now they perform the same for me and they still are not done apparently modifying their engine for vulkan... Remember initially it was just a wrapper.

i recall Talos benchmark late last year still show DX11 is superior.

While it was apparent for years that the state machine system doesn't fit the hardware, we had to use it, because the only available APIs on PC forced it.


IHVs engineers know very well that I've been crying for years (since multi-core CPUs started to become standard) to allow us to record GPU command buffers on separate thread. But that didn't happen in DX10, nor DX11, nor any of OpenGL iterations. So our engine was adapted to work with what we had. Now that DX12 and Vulkan came, it will take quite some rewrite to get it all turned upside down. Until that's done, Vulkan will be at disadvantage. But the very fact that it is close to DX11 in speed while it's working practically in emulation shows how much potential there is.

What i have heard is that apple has tighter control on the graphics drivers on their OS. If I am wrong somebody correct me.

 

on the other hand Microsoft too had no interest in vulkan but they will not stop AMD, NVidia, intel from shipping vulkan drivers to enable it on windows.

Apple has Metal, their own low level API, don't know if they are willing to ditch it in favor of Vulkan

Croteam has done quite a piss poor job of implementing Vulkan into Talos Principle - the game still runs Vulkan in a wrapper and the engine is still single threaded

 

since I got myself a GTX1070 I will resume my Talos Principle Vulkan Linux vs Windows benchmarks

my point is that they don't need to ditch metal. Microsoft didn't ditch dx12, but the GPU vendors enabled Vulkan on windows...

it's coming along though with every patch it gets better and the patches keep coming... They admit it's not done yet.

 

they are a small company though so they cannot make big tech changes quickly the way iD did. They need time. Most companies their size would not have taken this on... They would have just licensed unity or unreal engine.

I hope that vulkan is going to be implimented in more games than dx12, we have seen the failure that dx12 is so far and i have no real hope of it getting better anytime soon.

it's been nearly a year since they started work at adding Vulkan to it

for quite a while now they haven't done anything to advance Vulkan implementation

I'd rather they use Vulkan over dx12, open source code needs more mainstream support, plus Vulkan appears to be more efficient than dx12 even on nvidia hardware so there is no reason to not like this.
