Cable modems with the Intel Puma 6 chipset LAG!!!

Brantknew
Intel's Puma 6 chipset, used in gigabit broadband modems around the world, suffers from latency jitter so bad it ruins online gaming and other real-time connections.

Here are just a few devices with PUMA 6 chipsets which tend to be associated with gigabit cable modems. Not all of these are confirmed with a problem - it is just likely at this point.

Arris SB6190
Arris TG1672G
Arris TM1602
Super Hub 3 (Arris TG2492LG) (commonly - virgin media)
Hitron CGN3 / CDA / CGNV series modems:
Hitron CDA-32372
Hitron CDE-32372
Hitron CDA3-35
Hitron CGNV4
Hitron CGNM-3552 (commonly - Rogers)
Hitron CGN3 (eg CGN3-ACSMR)
Hitron CGNM-2250 (commonly - Shaw)
Linksys CM3024
Linksys CM3016
TP-Link CR7000
Netgear AC1750 C6300 AC1900
Netgear CM700
Telstra Gateway Max (Netgear AC1900 / C6300) (Australia)
Cisco DPC3848V
Cisco DPC3941B / DPC3941T (commonly - Comcast Xfinity XB3)
Cisco DPC3939
Compal CH7465-LG / Arris TG2492LG (commonly - Virgin Media Hub 3)
Samsung "Home Media Server"

Consider a confirmation on the SD 6190. Seen lots of forum post at DSLreports with people having issues.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

I'm a little concerned because I've been eyeballing the Hitron CDA3-20 so that I can use the 100mbit or higher plans on TekSavvy.  Since TekSavvy is a TPIA, I'm limited by what Rogers Cable will approved which is a narrow selection of modems.

We have a Linksys CM3024 modem which uses the Intel Puma 6 chip.

Today (Feb. 20, 2017 i contacted Linksys support on their chat window to ask if there's a fix for latency spikes. After referring the support rep. (who was very polite and helpful) to the Linksys user forum thread on the latency issue here's the gist of her reply:

I have checked the link you provided.

Issue has been replicated by Product Engineers, we are aware of the issue and are working on a resolution. Linksys was aware of this issue prior to bubble-up, and are working on a solution. No lead time on firmware fix\release date.

The temporary work around is on the power cycle.

ok thanks for your help.

Regarding with the registration of your product to your ISP, please refer to the link below:

what does " prior to bubble-up" mean?

Marie Nessa S
Bubble-up means we report this case to our product engineers.
11:54:39 AM
I will be doing that in my end for you.

end of excerpt.

Sooo, the only workaround is to power cycle the modem. After doing a power cycle of the modem, router and computer there were fewer high latency moments but it didn't go away altogether. I guess i'll have to go back to the old trusty Motorola sufboard modem ....

There is no fix for it right now.  power cycle does not work.

Bump. Still a very important Issue that needs to be addressed. More information on it here. This will probably never be fixed by a software update. https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r31122204-SB6190-Puma6-TCP-UDP-Network-Latency-Issue-Discussion~start=2880

They're right, they've pushed like 2-3 firmware updates. Some make it worse, it might fix it for a day or two but the ping/lag spikes return with a vengeance.

What im inferring is, the issue will never be fixed by a software update. The only logical road they have is to call it a defective product and take it off the market and ask for returns. No software update will fix a issue this bad! If you have a Puma 6 modem ditch it! If you have a SB6190 switch to a SB8200.
