AMD Ryzen lacks/limits OC on some chips?!

NumLock21

click bait? IDGAF can't think of good topic title.

Is this a repost? IDGAF x2

There some theory out there saying that AMD Ryzen has their CPUs in both the X and non-X skus. Some say the X stands for AMD's Extended Frequency Range or XFR. This lets users with different types of cooling overclock their CPUs, while non X models can has limited OC and can't pass its TDP limit. It's also the reason why there is a huge price difference for such a small increase in clock speed between the X and non-X Ryzen cpus. It's also speculated that AMD Ryzen X based processors will not come with cpu coolers.

Quote

Essentialy, AMD's "X" nomenclature regarding its upcoming Ryzen chips seems to denote the presence or absence of their touted XFR (eXtended Frequency Range) feature. This is part of AMD's SenseMI Technology suite, which aims to bring higher, intelligent performance to their Ryzen chips through the use of some particular technologies. XFR as it is, appears to be an added, automated overclocking capability to the chip, going further than the Precision Boost clocks would usually allow, supposedly scaling with the cooling performance of the end user's machine.

The X models are simply the high binned chips with XFR. XFR is similar to NVidia boost, where it will auto OC within a power envelope and thermal limit granted by good cooling (beastly air, CLC, CWC, etc).

It will be very interesting to see how well these chips will oc. The technology is cool and all, but if we only get 1-200mhz oc, there really isn't a point.

Watching Intel have competition is like watching a headless chicken trying to get out of a mine field

Why would they bundle a cooler that they could sell for $15-20 for free? :D

I mean it has performance similar to a 212 evo so...ya know...

It saddens me that a theory about an unreleased product becomes newsworthy. This is not a stab at you @NumLock21 as I often enjoy the formatting of your posts and the topics themselves, but more towards techpowerup. When the source of an article starts with "A reddit user", you know you've reached the bottom of the barrel.

That entire article is a mess of assumptions based on unfounded rumors about things we know nothing about.

AMD needs to include stock coolers on all of their cpus and not copy intel.

So you can get started on your build as well as test it out until your better cpu cooler arrives. It would suck to have everything arrive, except the cooler, where it will take another week.

The other reason is for backup use. Cooler broke, sending it back for RMA. In the meantime use stock cooler.

Nice set up you have going on dere :P

Too bad my RX470 is complete junk when overclocking...165W for the GPU only when all I want is 1350MHz and 190W for 1400MHz (AKA, a single 6 pin isn't enough without triggering the OCP on my PSU or it just stutters) but at least it's only 90-110W at stock speeds (1270MHz)...

I actually have all my peripheral cables braided into one bunch, that way when I wanna service the computer I can take the whole braid off, then put it back on once I'm done. Not great looking on the front of the computer, but very practical
