Best way to reset an internal drive to external

Please don't double post 

Format the drive using disk management. Delete all the partitions and then add one partition to take full advantage of the space

What is the best way to reset an internal drive as an external. I swapped my HDD out for an SSD on this computer and I am just wondering the best way to reset the HDD to get the full potential back as one drive and not a couple of different volumes.
