About time! I'm usually excited when Apple introduces something like this to their devices, as a lot of the time it makes other companies focus more on it, even if it's just to say they have it. Buzzword marketing is very real.

I do believe a completely wireless device is what their end game is. I seem to recall reading something about that being one of their desires.

I think the true buttons might already be on the way out. There are some rumors the iPhone X will have touch strips instead of buttons.

I could follow Apple's logic on not having a headphone jack, as much as I disagree with them doing it, but not having a cable at all is so....

The bad thing about this I think is having to buy extra ones to have in multiple locations (work, home, home office, whatever) as opposed to just taking a cable with you that you could easily plug into a port hub.

Unless this charger will be convenient to unplug and take just as easily.

Wireless charging is great.....except if you want/need:

  • a "quick" charge
  • use it while it's charging
  • while traveling (on a plane/bus/train/car/etc...)
  • multiple charging locations (expensive)

Wireless charging only would be bad. Wireless charging as an extra feature would be nice, although tbh, I wouldn't use it all that much.

Yeah but if you think Apple will implement an industry standard like a Qi charger you'd be so wrong.

It's a gimmick. You still have a base connected to a wire connected to a power outlet. Plugging in a wire will cost you 2 seconds at most. Meanwhile you're limited on power output and you'll gain transfer losses and heat. You could just make the damn thing like 2mm thicker for no ugly camera bump, a much bigger battery and oh holy crap a headphone jack but noooooooo, we're Apple, we make gimmicks.

ofc, but for the quick charge when you need it then could just use a normal charger.

I don't think wireless charging is a gimmick, not in any way. For me it isn't about saving the truble of plugging it in or anything like that. I just think that it is in many ways very convenient and for me it is easier to make an habit out of just laying it on a pad.

I charge over night and it lasts all day, although I never use it during the day most of the time, and when I do, a wireless charger is not a convenient solution.

To keep a device topped up on a desk, not a lot of wasted energy and easier than using cables, but for charging from discharged, or during use, it generates too much heat and takes too long.

again it is not about the time. It is because it is easier for me to make a habit of it. I would never ever be able to go back to a phone without it. Also it doesn't cost 100$, I gave 50$ for the original Nokia fatboy charger and it doesn't seem like phones with wireless charging cost more than phones without it.
