Wd Blue Vs Black 1tb

So i've found that i no longer have room on my ssd and i can't really afford to buy another but i would like a hard drive that is reasonably fast so a friend said to get a black which is £70 at 7200rpm 64mb however this looks identical to the wd blue 7200rpm with 64mb so i'm just asking what is the difference other than the extra 3 year warranty on the black at £25 difference in price all i want to do is put my steam and origin library and maybe some other programs on it will the blue be just as fast as the black and in which case should i just buy the blue?

If I were you I would get the Black one even if it's a bit more expensive for the simple fact that this particular HDD is great.

I'm using from 2014 a WD Black 500GB and I must say that since then it didn't give me any error and it's fast and silent as hell.

Blacks are loud. I'd get the Blue. There really isn't a huge difference between them.

Trust me, it isn't loud at all. Actually I can't even hear it and I'm sitting next to the PC(20cm from it) with the case opened. The only thing that I am able to hear is the sound made by the CPU Cooler which at 2000-2500 sounds like a vacuum cleaner ^^ (It's the default one for a 880K)

blue drives go through less testing but ask @Boogieman_WD from WD to confirm. The higher warranty reflects the manufacturers confidence in the lifetime of the drive so if it lasts 50% longer it makes sense it would cost 50% more. i recommend the higher warranty and enterprise class drives for important files. if its just for games or backup you might not notice the difference. i can confirm from my own experience the post above that black drives are noisy.

@R3ep3r I disagree. I've heard a couple, and they've all been loud. As you pointed out, it's relative.

its not just the blacks that are noisy. the RE drives are also noisy they sound like the read heads are made by www.estwing.com

Well, I am not here to argue about that, but in my opinion it is not loud or maybe I got used to it.

Haha, I don't doubt it. I think the higher the RPM the louder the drive. One of the reasons I'm leaning more towards 5900rpm drives over 7200rpm for a storage tower.

Considering i have a quite themed build are these louder than be quiet low rpm fans?

this isnt the hardware difference but i believe the wd blue's come with a 3 year warranty while the blacks come with a 5 year.

edit: wd blue comes with 2 year warranty. the wd blue's have between 8 and 64mb cache while blacks as far as i know have a flat 64mb of cache.

I have 3 Noctua fans that run as low as 300rpm at idle and i had to remove the 3.5" WD black drive.

I was torn between a pair of 4TB Blues, or 4TB Seagate Constellation S.3s. Still not sure about Seagate. Seen too many fail.

Though it seems that sales over. Would you say the Reds are superior to the Blues? Any particular reason?

Reds are designed for raid operation blues are not more for casual users

Go for the blue. I've got a black drive and it's loud when accessing files, makes like a crunching sound.

theres reds that are 5400rpm and have better warranty. there are red pro that are 7200rpm and better warranty than red but higher price. what are you planning on doing with the drives?

There are some differences between the WD Blue and WD Black besides the longer warranty.

 

Basically the first one is meant for everyday usage and it's fully capable to run most games as well as many programs for editing or programming, while on the other hand WD Black is a performance oriented hard drive that has firmware features like a built-in dual-core CPU that makes it great for multitasking, and it is designed for heavy gaming, big workloads and intensive file usage. Also, WD Black's performance quality comes from the way it is build with some additional hardware inside, additional features in the firmware, the integrated CPU and improved cache.
