Intel's responses to AMD Ryzen with i7 7740K and i5 7640K

NumLock21

Speculations are going around the web that Intel might release 2 new cpus in response to AMD's upcoming Ryzen processors. First one, is the Core i7 7740K, this processor is clocked at 4.3GHz, 100MHz higher, than the Core i7 7700K and has a higher TDP of 100w vs 91w TDP on the 7700K. Next up is the Core i5 7640K, where it will have a based clock of 4GHz, compared to the standard 3.8GHz on the 7600K. One unique feature for this i5, is the support of Hyper Thread. No turbo boost clock were mentioned for both processors and for now this is just a rumor.

Be interesting to see how they price that 7640k, as its pretty much an i7 with a tiny bit less cache.

Also this might be a better article to use as a source (read it on this one earlier but didn't think to post it :P - https://www.overclock3d.net/news/cpu_mainboard/intel_is_reportedly_creating_higher_clocked_kaby_lake_cpus_to_combat_ryzen/1

Gives a nice table of the supposed specs for both the 7640k and 7740k

this is cool, maybe we'll see quad core i3's soon enough, maybe the pentiums getting hyperthreading was a sign of intel upgrading the tiers

So wait, are those just factory overclocked higher than before, and re-sold? Or is a different architecture / design used as it's a "new chip"?

I really hope that that is isn't going to turn out to be true. Intel is throwing their very easy naming scheme out of the window at the moment.

Pentiums suddenly have hyper threading and render the i3's basically useless. If they now add an i5 with hyper threading then they have fucked their naming scheme completely.

This is almost AMD level confusing

i5... hyperthreading? How interesting.

IMO, a xeon with HT? They are i7 with the price of a Core i5

Probably need a socket change

Just make i9s with 6 cores intel, thus people will not be confused and you can simply lower i7 pricing accordingly, just saying

Uh so they clocked it minutely higher, and adjusted the TDP accordingly? Seems a bit... watery.

Lol. But dummys would interpret that as core iT. And we all know how that will turn out.

I see that Intel is taking the process of Binning i7-7700K CPUs more seriously this time. And by seriously I mean "Wow, they sure like churning out perfectly working 7700K's only to intentionally reduce clockspeeds and cache sizes by artificially cutting microscopic traces on the CPU die after manufacturing. What a waste of R&D, time, and money."

Alas, binning is not a new thing, and even Linus has covered this process from way back in his NCIX days, but jeeze this is going a little bit too far.

Warning: Mad Props pun imminent. Prepare to cringe. :)

They probably can't do that on the current factory run but starting the next one they could turn to 6HT 4HT and 4 No HT for the i7 i5 and i3 respectively which is a change that they should have done as soon as they went down in the manufacturing process node this last time with Skylake but well, it shows you how AMD was needed in the processor department to put pressure on them.
