DL 360 G5 vs R610/410

TheGeeker

I currently have 2 DL360 G5s and 1 DL380 G4. I only paid 30$ for all of them as a lot on craigslist. I would like to have servers and maybe one will be on 24/7 (our power is about .17 cent per KWH or something) Is it worth it for me to try and sell all these and get something else?

I am thinking either:

R710

R610

R410

DL 360 G6/7 (I already have the rack mounts and have a rack I want them in so Dell serves are the cost of server + rack mounts.)

i'd say 30$ is about the expected money for those at this point, the G5's are still *acceptable*, but G4's are just.. scrap metal at this point..

you can always clean them out and do some testing, and try to flip them at $50 a pop as a "refurb" and then spend that money on a bunch of DL380 G6's :P

would the g6s be worth it? compared to an r710? How does it spec out?

well.. you'd go one bump up in the generational ladder, and G6's are coming fresh into the "almost for free" market.

the main differences are ram support, slightly faster processors, faster SATA/SAS connections, and the bump from the architecture around LGA771 to the architecture around LGA1366 (that's where the FSB went away)

How would an R410 stack up against these? Better worse? Sorry new to the server  world and their configs

the R410 is of the same generation as G6, i do kinda wanna note that i'd prefer to recommend going with 2u servers, because 1u is just painful to work with :D

Why a pain? Not sure if this is right but looks like its quieter too. https://techmikeny.com/server-guide/

db isnt everything, 2u servers are loud, 1u servers are just plainly a painful whine.

should also note they measured noise during the bootup procedure, at which point the fans are all running full freaking tilt.

i also wonder what kind of fridge they have where a rackmount server is quieter than their fridge :D

G5's are actually pretty okay as well, but G6's are still a decent chunk better.

I have an r410, r610, and r710 and the noise level is about the same depending on work load.  (Atleast to me)  Ive never used HP servers however my cousins said theyre better for some reason.   Anyways what Im getting at is that theyre fine servers and work for basically whatever you need them for, virtualization, web server, firewall, etc.

they really arent. for all intents and purposes, dell and HP "professional" products are identical, with the only difference to go one way or the other being the service you get along with that product.

What would you pick between an r410 and r610? Want to run esxi, etc..
