1070 or 1080?

Here's my situation..
I've got a half-decent gaming rig;

i7-4790k
Gigabyte GA-Z97x-Gaming7
MSI R9-290x (4GB)
16gb DDR3 (Corsair Vengeance)
800w PSU (XFX)
1TB HDD
250GB SSD (Samsung Evo Pro)
Corsair H80i (V1)
Dual 1080p Monitors (1 is 60hz, 1 is 144hz)

It's tax season, and I'm due for a GPU upgrade. I can't decide which one I should grab. The simple version of the argument seems to be; "If you're not playing 4k, a 1070 is fine." My only problem with that is that I want my 1080p games (Sometimes 1440 supersampled) to all run at awesome framerates (at least 150+ in games where you can run passed 60) at "Ultra" settings. Games like CS:GO, Rocket League, and even WoW aren't a problem. But games like RE7, Titanfall 2, and other AAA games have me worried.

What are your opinions? Should I shell out the extra bills and get a 1080, or should I save that money (maybe upgrade something else) and get a 1070? Also, with your opinion, I also haven't decided which 3rd party to go with (MSI, ASUS, etc) so feel free to give your opinion on that too!

Thanks so much!

1070 is the best value for money, i suggest a 1070 for 1440p gaming or high fps 1080p. unless you have too much extra money laying around the 1080 is not worth getting over the 1070.

What monitor do you have? Because if the monitor doesn't have more than 60 Hz you won't notice the difference in frame rate anyway (I assume you already know this and have a 150+Hz display but I wanted to be sure)

EDIT: so sorry didn't read your specs. See next answer

why would you want to run them at 150+ fps? is your monitor 60hz, 75hz, 144hz? i cap most my games at 65-72 fps with a 1070 just because you dont really need to render that many FPS because you end up using more power in the end

A 1070 will be enough (maybe a bit overkill). I recommend the MSI Gaming X one because it's the one I have and it's fantastic.

1070.

Save money to pay taxes. You can still play with a good amount of FPS with a 1070.

If you're fine with 1080p I would suggest getting a 1080 (always get the best single GPU you can afford). If you think about upgrading to 1440p though I would recommend getting a 1070 and a monitor upgrade since (imo at least) higher resolution (as long as the frame rates are still around 100Hz) > ludicrous frame rates

You wont be able to Crank every single Ultra and AA and all on 1080p even with the GTX 1070, even though the 1070 is the best frames to cost value you will need the horse power of the 1080 to garantee you are at least above 100 fps on games like The wicher 3 and GTA V etc all graphical quality max out.

But if you are willing to put shadows on high not ultra, use FXAA only, and some other decreases then the 1070 is your card

I never mind adjusting a few settings. but like, right now, I have to have GTA V in "dumb baby mode" in order to even get a consistent framerate. I definitely don't mind dumbing down a few shadows.

Ehm nope. Why? I mean if you can afford a 1080 and a new monitor go with that but if your budget doesn't allow for more I would get a 1440p panel and a 1070.

I see you have a 144hz panel. If you want to be running 144hz (even at 1080p) at the highest grapphical settings possible as often as possible in as many games as possible then you absolutely should get the gtx 1080. A lot of games will not need nearly that much horsepower, but you will appreciate it in the ones that do.

1070 is a good card, but if you're trying to push 144 FPS and have a bit more longevity, the 1080 is your card. If you do supersampling to 1440p you'll benefit from the 1080's horsepower. The 1080 is typically 20-30 FPS faster than the 1070.

well then you can go 1070 it will be a huge upgrade, if you want to save some buck you could give a look on used 980ti´s on the internet too, some might been selling quite cheaper due to being the past architecture however one is roughly like a GTX 1075 kinda of level

For what you want with high and ultra settings 1080 it is. For certain triple A titles even then it is not enough at 1080p at that refresh rate.

EVGA with ACX 3.0 coolers and MSI Gaming are very good coolers that are still relative quiet. Asus Strix are good performers as well but is louder then the mentioned ones. If silence is a must, go with the MSI Gaming cards.

The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane.

personally I'd take the 1070 and be done with it, however I do live in a country where a 1070 is around 640 usd and a 1080 a wopping 920 usd at the cheapest. If you're stingy about the fps you get take a titan xp and be done with it, otherwise the 1080 is your best bet if you want 150+ frames, if you wanna be more realistic and want great value for your money the 1070 is amazing.

I would recommend the 1070, the performance per dollar is much better than a 1080. I'm rocking a Gigabyte G1 Gaming 1070 myself, overclocked to 2,2GHz along a 1080p 144hz monitor. I have locked FPS on all of my games to 144, to match the monitors refresh rate. As an example, I am constantly getting 144FPS in Doom on Ultra/Nightmare settings, and drops down to 135ish FPS when turning fast with mouse.

In Witcher 3 on Ultra preset + Highest Post Processing, I am getting solid 90-100FPS during live gameplay, with forests, beach, water, combat and over 100 FPS during cutscenes/dialogue. What I'm saying is, the 1070 is more than enough for 144HZ monitor. Sure, you won't get exactly constantly 144FPS in every single AAA game on ultra settings, but you get my point :)

Main:  1650 v2   @ 4,6GHz   -   X79 Deluxe                -   GTX 1080 @ 2000MHz   -   24GB DDR3 @ 2400MHz / CL10

Side:   i7-4790K @ 4,5GHz   -   Maximus 7 Hero        -   GTX 1070 @ 2114MHz    -  16GB DDR3 @ 2666MHz / CL12

Well for 1080p the GTX 1070 is a great card. If you have a plan to upgrade monitor to 1440p/4k in the near future I would suggest 1080. I had 290X too and  I bought GTX 1080 2 weeks ago. Performance bump was insane. While playing Overwatch at 1440p Ultra with 290X I had ~55-60fps. With GTX 1080 i have 120fps+ while playing Eve Online on second monitor :) Great card. Heh and this is my first Nvidia card ever :)
