I just look up the Amazon link. But how how how.... could a HD598(Cs) be so cheap???? It used to be like $160-170 for the normal HD598.

Cs is a newer, cheaper model. Same drivers IIRC but closed-back and slightly less premium build.

Yeah, the Sennheiser 558s. 

 

I also like the Philips SHP 9500.

 

Both are equal to my ears. The Philips are brighter, and the Sennheiser has more bass. 

 

If you don't mind on-ear headphones, the $40 JBL S300 (Amazon.com) absolutely rocks.

I have the 558. Absolutely love them. They're so good!!!!! Really recommend them, and the amazon reviews are solid too!!!

I don't think the drivers are the same. The 598 Cs is not the 598 but closed back, I think it's only borrowing off the 598 name. Some people over at head-fi speculate that it's the same drivers as the HD569.

 

@z123killer Are you looking for open back or closed back? Also, best would be subjective to the type of music you listen to.

 

Overall, open back I really enjoy the HD558. For closed back, there's the M40x, Status Audio CB-1, or HD598 (which is a bit above your budget).

C'mon! This list is kinda...well I disagree with it.  Especially, for budget headphones. Superlux 681 pssshhhttt....These things are murderous treble canons.
