Nvidia Shield Tablet - Gamepad or Mouse + Keyboard?

Laggger164

Here is the main question: For Nvidia Shield Tablet gaming on the go, is a Keyboard and mouse good enough or is a Gamepad/Controller better?

So I already posted a thread regarding whether to buy the Nvidia Shield controller or another wireless one. For now, I think if I will buy a controller, it is going to be the new Nvidia Shield one.

But I still don't know if spending 70€ for a controller that I might not use that often or at all is a good idea.

I am pretty much set on buying a new mouse, the Logitech G203 seems to be the best candidate, although it is quite small and I have large hands. But so far I was able to get used to any mouse I have bought so we will see.

I was pretty much always a keyboard and mouse guy, I was raised on those 2 things. The only proper console we had was a PS1, then we had some other weird ones. The point is, I don't use Gamepads.

How many games would be compatible with a mouse and keyboard? Do you guys know, or do I have to find out myself? I have a mouse and keyboard(duh) but no controllers.

How inconvenient will it be to lug around a keyboard and mouse? The mouse is definitely going to be in my backpack ready to be used, but I don't know if I should put a keyboard there, it is pretty large.

What are your thoughts on this guys? Thanks for all the replies!

Depends on the games you play. Do you have an android device at the moment? do you play only touch enabled games? if so then you don't need a gamepad IMHO.

So I have an Android phone (pretty cheap, no games on it) and the Nvidia Shield Tablet K1.

I play only touch based games because I don't have a gamepad. Simple as that, but I would like to play some other games, maybe flight or FPS games. However I don't know if I would like it.

Are there Android games, mainly FPSes, that can be played with a keyboard and mouse? I like them, better than a gamepad so far, however I am not sold on the portability of the keyboard.

Don't know about the keyboard and mouse for games like FPS, the functionality would have to be built into the game and I can't see many android users wanting to play games with keyboard and mouse because of the disadvantages like you mentioned of portability. Much more likely to support gamepad though, if I have time in the next few days and no-one else answers your questions as to gamepads working, I will try it for you as I have the shield k1 tablet too, and a gamepad... I also have the shield tv, so will actually try it on there for you as the functionality and game support would be the same, just the ability of the system is slightly better with the shield tv I believe. Do you have any games in mind? they have to be free though for me to try them.

Great! That will help a lot!

As far as games go, I am thinking Overkill 3, Fractal Combat, Red Bull Air Race, maybe HIT, Dead Effect 1 and 2, ARC Squadron, Turbo Dismount, Beach Buggy Blitz, Modern Combat 5.

Also Gamestreaming, not GeforceNOW I cannot afford another subscription. (I am not a console peasant)

Sorry, I don't do game streaming... not much point for me as the PC is in the same room as my TV and other devices anyway... and I am a console peasant as well as PC person, I just prefer console for some things.

I will let you know how I get on with the games with the gamepad. Not all of them though, some of them I don't even like the look of the gameplay at all, must be my age maybe, lol :)

Hey, these are the ones I was interested in, I don't want you to try out every single one of them.

Maybe you will like some of them yourself eh? Thank you so much!

Also, I changed my mind, I think I will buy something like the Logitech F710. It's cheaper and supports DirectInput as well as XInput.

NO worries, isn't the f710 for PC gaming though? don't think it'll work on the shield, but could be wrong.

Seems like it can connect: https://www.google.sk/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=%23&ved=0ahUKEwiq1ujm8__RAhWMcBoKHXsVD7gQxa8BCB4wAw&usg=AFQjCNF1sHlk2z9QIx28jtvfnGP_UlkifA&sig2=zMf5C9sqXP2Ec_Ntsx5BOg

I saw a thread where the F310 was said to be compatible with it and it's just a cheaper, wired version of the F710. Or is the F710 an upgraded version of the F310? I guess we will never know!

Also, there is the F510, which is the same thing as the F710, just wired.

Link doesn't do anything bud, lol

Anyway, good luck with it... I hope it works out OK. There's no point in my trying those games out for you though really as I would be using the nvidia gamepad, so there might be different support for titles, in other words even if I get it working good on my tablet/shield TV, doesn't mean it would work with your gamepad you're getting.

Well thanks anyways! I will try it at some point. However, did you ever use Dosbox emulator or similar? I would like to try it to play Star Wars X-Wing alliance, I have no idea if it will work though. Might be a cool thing to try out if you like the old games! (I sure like some of them a lot)

No worries, yes I tried a few emulators when I first got shield TV over a year ago, some of them are a bit hit and miss for supporting controllers though I found at the time. I have heard plently of people rave about them though, so might just take a bit of work to get right for certain games... probably worth a shot doing some research on the EMU site (if they have one), and see if there are some tips in the forums. I will probably have a go again at some point to play a few of the old favourites like donkey kong, space invaders etc - when I get some time that is.

It seems funny to me people calling x-wing alliance an old game, I know it's my age showing though, lol.

Yeah, I played X-Wing alliance like 3 years ago. It was a blast, such a great game. I loved the movement, the power distribution system is the best thing I have ever seen and there are only a few games that have it. Also, unlike "every other videogame I have ever played except for Darksouls" this game is hard. You gotta Git gud skrub, but nowadays with games like CoD, Tomb Raider or many others are soooo easy.

They aren't a challenge at all, if you screw up and have to restart, you can restart from where you left off/screwed up pretty much so you just try until you get through, you don't need to change tactics that much or anything.

The Logitech F710, F510 and F310 have a Xinput - DirectInput switch, so that might be useful, although I would think that emulators already can use XInput for the older games.

What did you try to emulate on the Shield TV? What emulator did you use?

I honestly can;t remember the name of the emu, I had one when the shield TV first came out and it died on me, so got refunded at the time - it was that one that I had the emu on, something like SNESemu... And when I got my new shield TV around a year ago I decided not to bother with EMUs on it, so just play android games on it apart from stuff like KODI, file management and some other apps. I might have a gp again when I get some time some day, but TBH at the moment it's hard enough getting some time to play ANY games, so when I have the time I normally pick one of my newer games that I still have to complete, or a like FPS multiplayer or something, killing some noobs... not that I am pro or anything, not even close as my disabilities prevent me now, I'm lucky I can play at all most days, so am greatful that I can play at all :)

I don't actually mind some of the easier games... I get too frustrated at games where you have to do a lot of stuff over again to get past, have broken many controllers and a few consoles back in the day because of stuff like that, lol. I like a bit of a challenge, but not something that's like 30-60 mins of gameplay over again to get right again just because of the last minute being harder, I think 5-10 mins max would be better of they have to get you to do it again and again... I mean that's what difficulty levels are supposed to be for right?

I am not saying that the older games were just difficult and you had to grind through the same level doing the same thing and hoping you get through.

X-Wing alliance is doing it in a different way, you need to get better at your strategy, your aiming, your piloting, many other things too! Also, if you just couldn't get through a level for any reason(there are some VERY difficult levels there), you had the option to skip I think 3 levels. If you wanted to skip more then 3, you would have to beat one of those skipped ones.

Also, there is no problem in not being able to play video games as much. One hour a day is plenty, although I play more than that if I can and want to.

Disabilities? Like what? I might have some games that you can try out. I am a healthy person myself (yay), but I might be able to help you in some way.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm OK with knowing which games I can play. It's not really a case of being able to play some games and not others, I either can't play or I can play, the problems I have is with my mobility in general and widespread body pain. I am lucky some days if I can hold my shield tablet to be able to read.

I only realised I had it 5-7 years ago, but have probably had it most of my life and diagnosed 4-5 years ago, just that it was a little easier to deal with when I was younger. I have good days and bad, pretty much what I would call a good day is being able to get out of bed and make some food sometimes... still with a lot of pain, but can move some. What most "normal" people would call a bad day  and curl up in bed, lol - it's kind of like having flu symptoms all the time, except worse becuase it never truly leaves and I have intense pains, spasms, and stomach problems. Feels also like you have very little energy and erratic sleep patterns. On a "great day" I can sometimes leave the house, yay for me, lol... and feel a bit livelier, these are the days I might be able to get some gaming in if my hands co-operate and don;t cramp up all the time. Bad days, don't even go there... can't get up, lethergic and no energy, very intense pains, cramps etc etc etc. If you really want to feel good that you don;t have it, look up fibromyalgia.

Anyway, hope anyone who's reading this never gets this horrible disorder... if anyone reading this does unfortunately have this or knows someone that does, feel free to PM me if you like, I have been living with it for a long time now and know where my limits are, and am trying new things often to try and alleviate some of the symptoms.

Well that was unexpected indeed. I am thinking you are not alone at home right? That somebody can help you?

Also, how are you treating it? I read the article you provided (thanks BTW) and saw there are a number of ways to do so.

So you need to have a controller to play sometimes?

Also, if you don't like that I am asking these kinds of questions, just let me know.

No, that's fine, I don't mind you asking questions at all. Yes, I have my family to help me when it's really bad.

I am taking a LOT of medications, but they don't really help with the pain and other symptoms that much unfortunately. The trouble is, if you ask a doctor that has no personal experience of this condition, they will say it's treatable, like in some of the articles online.. they believe that with changing lifestyle's and regular exercise it will help.... believe me it won't, unless you are in the 1% of people with this condition that doesn't have it very badly at all and are pretty much like regular people, jusyt with a few mobility problems maybe. I have tried a lot of things, but exercise isn't one of them, because I can't (like many others), because it already feels like I have broken legs, back etc... it is agony, even going down some stairs takes time and a lot of effort and it's like torture... now try telling someone that feels like that to exercise... they will bite your head off! lol. The ONLY relief I have found is, along with my regular pain meds and other meds, to have some very painful meds that cancer patients have... and even then they only really take the edge off. Apart from that I have now started taking hemp seed oil, and it helps, sometimes a lot and I feel almost normal again, with more energy too - but if you overdo things, you get put on your butt again basically, so it's only good for relieving symptoms, I have found out the hadr way a few times and then been in bed for a few days again afterwards :(. A lot of the time the oil only relieves a little bit of the symptoms, most of all the bowel problems, and some of the pain and stiffness in my joints.. but I'm greatful for whatever relief I can get. I would honestly, if given the chance give everything I own to feel "normal" again.

I am lucky that I have family to help me really, as they help with the cooking etc that I can't do much now, it's so much effort to even clean and dress myself most days, and wearing tight clothes are not gonna happen, lol... sweatpants and loose clothes are all I can stand to wear now. Tight, close fitting clothes feel like hell now, and I can't bear the heat now at all. I have noticed that my moods are much different to when I was "normal", I have dramatic mood swings, get angry easily, get anxious about leaving the house because of mobility and bowel problems etc.... it's not easy on my family either. Anyway, I don't want to turn this into a pity party... I appreciate you asking me about this stuff, it's not easy and I don't like to talk about it often as I get depressed if I think too much about it. What's worse IMO, is when someone says something like "are you still feeling ill" or "I thought you would have gotten over that by now" or something else completely stupid.... it's a chronic illness, and  I will have it all the time, for the rest of my life most likely. I can understand if people don't know me, ebing suprised that I'm still "ill", but when it's people that know you and you have explained everything before  - you feel like smacking them in the back of the head... hey just pick my hand up and smack a bitch for me would ya, lol.

Yeah, when I get to play I have to use controllers mostly, I can game a little on my PCs, but I mostly stick to RPGs or strategy games... other times for FPS I use one of my consoles as it's easier for me. I love gaming, it takes my mind off my problems for a bit. I also run a business where I build and fix PCs, luckily I have help there too or my business would go under when my symptoms are really bad. Hey, thanks for asking me about this stuff, it's good to get it out sometimes you know?  thanks man :)

Reading through this... you have the guts to get through it. You are running a business for god's sake, a business that needs fine muscle movement. That's crazy!

I had about 4 emotions changing, reading through this, heh. I cannot give you a cure (well that would be awesome tho eh' ?) but I am happy I can see through your perspective a little bit. When people have to go through things like these, their opinions on what is important change a lot. Which is kind of coming from experience, but nowhere near yours.

I am still young, 17 years old. This information is pure gold.

I am so glad I read that, thank you!

Also, I think the game Rimworld might suit you. If you haven't tried it, do it. I love that game and knowing that it's an indie game made by 1 guy and that it is in Alpha state with NO BUGS that I could see (and I am pretty good at finding bugs, not an expert but an idiot) it's a pretty damn good game. If you can use the keyboard and mouse simultaneously then the experience is going to be faster, better. However it is playable with just a mouse, I have mine set to a high DPI so I don't have to move it around as much (my PC setup is not really ideal) and I also never really cared about accuracy. However the on the fly DPI switch helps a lot, gonna get the Logitech G203 soon, I have read that for the money it is the best mouse ever so far.

Rimworld is kind of a leisure game, however when your base gets attacked you are gonna sweat your butt off. Some people are emotionally attatched to the colonists in the game and some people feel bad when one of their colonists dies. This is something I have never, ever, ever seen on another videogame. Once it is on sale I will buy it, right now I am pirating it, but I feel bad about doing that to this guy. Like seriously, that game is awesome. I know it is in development for a long time, but it's going to get finished pretty soon, but maybe in like 2 years or something. Depends on what he and or the community wants to add.

Or maybe the game Out There which is pretty nice, my brother plays it a lot on his phone, but when I tried it, I found it too difficult to understand and there were plenty of other games i wanted to try out.

Also, don't play Mafia 3. Mafia 2 and 1 are awesome, but 3? Nope, it sucks.

Thank you for the kind words, it took a while for me to get a better perspective on my condition... it's hard not to get angry or despondant about it when you first get sick, I was like it a lot, between sleeping a lot that is, lol. Exhaustion is the worst, along with pain of course... some days I only manage to get out of bed for a few hours, others I can't at all. It's very tricky as each day is different, the symptoms can be very similar day to day, but it's the intensity that changes all the time. Even minute to minute they change, you can be feeling OK-ish one minute and the next you have stomach cramps, or your leg/arm/back spasms or get intense shooting pain. It makes life interesting when you are carrying hot coffee, or even worse holding a kettle, lol :D

Yeah I might have to try rimworld, or even "out there" - as I said, I don't really play that many PC games... I think the main problem for me with the PC is speed of getting to the controls I need, whereas with a controller or even mobile gaming, the controls are more suited for me... but I'll definitely look out for rimworld. I had a look at it on steam, looks excellent... is it made by the same people that did "prison architect"?, if not it looks very similar. I'm definitely interested in it... I hope it comes out on xbox one or scorpio too though, makes it easier for me. I have 3 PCs. 2 servers, and yet I hope it comes to console, lol.

And I am here complaining about my teeth aching. It is so rewarding to see something from your perspective.

Also, does the weather affect you and the symptoms?

Have you tried the Steam controller? It might be very good for some games like Papers please, Civilization, maybe even Rimworld but I am not sure about that. Steam controllers are not normal controllers and they aren't keyboards and mice, they are somewhere in between. I haven't tried it myself, but reviews say that it has it's place.

Also, do you have a PC with an Nvidia GTX GPU that could do gamestreaming? I know that it is pretty awesome to play games on a TV while the computer is in a different room and you cannot hear it. #LinusQuietServerClosetRocks

Oh believe me I complain... when it's bad and I ache all over. Yes, the cold affects me very much and the symptoms are worse... during summer I do feel a bit better.

No, I haven't tried the steam controller, I don't like the look of it TBH, I am so used to the PS controllers that it'sbad enough using xbox controllers, lol... and I have switched to xbox again now, although I do own a PS4 too I prefer to play on xbox one s now, plus I love the ultra HD blu-rays, they are brilliant :D

I wouldn't use gamestreaming anyway TBH, my main PC is around 2 feet or so away from my TV anyway. This is how my room looked during my "upgrade" last year.2016-10-06 16.36.57.jpg

I am now in the process of upgrading my room some more and finsheing off some stuff that I previously didn't get around to, like mounting the bluetooth speakers and finishing the desktop completely. I also have to add a racking system for my tools and other stuff, hoping to get it all done soon, but haven't been feeling well lately and so have been spedning more time in bed unfortunately. I will get it done though, I am tenacious in that regard, lol.

I actaully haven't used a discrete GPU for some time myself now... I often thnk of it as I put them into others computers and test stuff etc, but I would really only use it for the CUDA cores mostly if I did have one, so it's a lot of outlay for that really when my CPU does the jobs I need fine. When I can justify the price I will add one for sure though :)

Did you upgrade your Shield yet? the update came thorugh for me a few days or so ago.. I like the changes, makes it a bit easier to navigate through the settings for one thing.

Yeah, I installed the update right away as soon as it was available.

I was worried that there would be problems with it.

For example, I have a 64GB microSD card inside, formatted as internal storage, not external.

I have read that it created problems when you take the SD card out while the device is on and stuff, but the update went just fine, no problems whatsoever.

I didn't take the SD card out, just updated it and bam, it worked.

Now I have multitasking, weird that it isn't on the older Android versions, such a useful thing.

Yes it has it's bugs and those 2GB of RAM also don't help, but it mostly works.

So what would you use the CUDA cores for? If you can find a used GTX980 or 970, you'll be golden.

I was thinking about doing it, but the FX-6300 isn't a CPU that you can call "Powerful" or "High-End".

It would definitely be a bottleneck.

However, when Ryzen and Vega come out, I think I will make a new PC. Maybe I'll wait a bit before that, but I will make it ASAP for me.

Also, yeah, you won't need to gamestream when your PC is right next to the damn TV. An HDMI cable or whatever is definitely cheaper than a new GPU.

Yeah, the multi-tasking of the shield is useful only in a few situations mostly because of low adoption by developers.. the facebook app for instance would be ideal in landscape with multi tasking, but doesn't support it, so if you're like me and prefer holding it in landscape you have wasted space when using facebook as it only fills around half the screen and has useless crap on the rest.

I used to use cuda cores, and probably would again for things like video coding/re-coding etc... it's suprisingly effective. I used to use only a GT240 with something like 24? cuda cores with my core2 CPU that I had way back then, and it cut the coding time in half, or more sometimes. So having like 1920 cuda cores on a gtx 1070, would be brilliant, especially paired with either a new ryzen cpu 8/16 cores/threads, or even my 6700K I have now. I would probably use it for gaming too obviously... I wouldn't spend £400 just for making video coding faster, lol :D

Also, have you ever tried trackballs? I know they aren't the most accurate and stuff, but I also know that they are extremely comfortable!

Just think about it, you don't move your hand at all, just the finger that uses the trackball and the fingers that click, it should be precise enough for point and click games like Rimworld.
