Probably going with 970m, thanks for the input :)

Recently built myself a water cooled 1060 i7 6700 k 32 GB unfortunately, for my school program I need a laptop. I've been on Kijiji and I have three options

a straight trade for a 970m 4K 6700 HQ MSI ghost Pro

A $300 train ride and straight trade for an Alienware 17 980m with 4K, 6820HK and 32 gigs of RAM

Or a two hour car ride plus $500 4 on MSI 1070 6700 HQ laptop

I'm strapped for cash but I know the 1070 is the best performer graphically is it worth it for first or second year CAD work in an architecture program? Is the lighter MSI laptops 4 pound weight a big enough difference? Open to suggestions

look on ebay for a laptop with an older dgpu, a 500 cad budget will get you something older Nvidia card. a program like Revit won't need monster spec on the go especially at a beginner level.

Oh and to answer your statement about getting a lighter cheaper laptop with a lighter GPU is that I will be pretty much without space as well so a desktop may not be feasible. Don't know I have the question of is 17 inches in eight pounds way too heavy when compared to 4 pounds and 15 inches?

Calm down. None of those are good deals. What I'd recommend is IF POSSIBLE, return the parts, get a laptop and a desktop with slightly inferior specs than the one you have right now.

Unfortunately I bought my parts are there second hand in the case of GPU RAM and cooler. Everything else was bought on boxing day and can no longer be returned. I need a laptop that can be used for everything from AutoCAD to notes to gaming

I can also get Alienware Graphics amp down the line allowing me to get a 1070 or Quadro card depending on the need

MSI. The Alienware is shit. They've not made a single good notebook since they went BGA.

I'm assuming 6700HQ + 1070 is the GT72S? There isn't any other MSI know of with that spec.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Msi GT62VR Dominator Pro 1070 8gb (+$500)

vs.

MSI Ghost Pro 4K GTX 970m 3gb

vs

2016 Alienware 17 R3 980m 8g

All have similar M.2 128gb ssd and 1Tb 7200 HDD

  1. Ghost Pro is slim and light with 4k but a giant pain to upgrade with weakest gpu
  2. Dominator has nice 120Hrz G-Sync is easy to upgrade with by FAR the strongest gpu ($500 is difficult for me to manage after spending on system)
  3. Alienware is heaviest with biggest and 4k screen is extremely easy to upgrade and has double RAM of others with middle GPU

Specwise the alienware is solid and has the Egpu.  I've seen dozens of bad reviews for alienware but thousands of good ones.  I'm kind of curious for any personal experience - please remember I won't be paying any extra for this laptop over the Ghost Pro

This laptop is ok... how much are you paying for it entirely? How much did the desktop cost you? Might be able to get you a better laptop for a similar price if you can sell your desktop is why I ask.

You cannot upgrade ANY of these laptops. Their CPUs and GPUs are all soldered to the board. RAM and Storage is all you can change. Don't even consider being able to get anything better in the future.

I know that, its why I'm so leery of the Ghost Pro as the 1070 is great and I can get an external GPU on alienware pretty cheap.  That 970m is getting weak quickly though.

Ghost pro is a straight trade for my system

The alienware is my system + my peripherals worth ~ 200

(As well as 8ish hours of travel but there is a College I'm checking out where I'd trade so double whammy)

The Dominator (1070) is my system + $500

I tried 2500 then quickly dropped to 2000 then 1700 and now I'm trying for 1500

I'm almost certainly going with the 1070 at this point, in large part because of this thread :D
