@i_build_nanosuits do you think the 480 will out scale the 980 in the long run?

with 8GB under the hood if you get one that has proper cooling i think you'll be in great shape especially if you have plans on getting your hands on a nice freesync monitor in the future.

On the used circuit I can pick up either a 8gb rx480 or a gtx980 for 200$. As of right now and as far as future use goes which should I get?

They perform about the same...RX 480 has more video memory...and support Freesync monitors.

GTX 980 is a bit faster, less memory, and support gsync monitors which are more expensive.

Why? Isn't the 980 better atm, and do you think the 480 will out scale it later?

You said as far as future goes so I was recommending a card that will last for you in the future and as of right now they are pretty much equal with AMD update

That's what I'm asking will the 480 out scale the 980 later or do you think they will stay about where they are in regards to each other?

DX12 and Vulkan is the future. We all know AMD's card perform better in DX12 than a GTX 1060 which is same or stronger than a 980

they don't...go check benchmarks it's half and half...some DX12 games AMD does better and some DX12 nvidia does better it's still depending on what the game was optimized/sponsored for/by as it's always been the case...AMD has crap DX11 drivers that's why they see that ''boost'' when moving to DX12 but that does not mean ''AMD's card perform better in DX12''...not at all...

I haven't seen anything that suggests a 1060 is better than a 980 or even very comparable

This. I've seen the 1060 and 480 going neck n neck in everything the past 6 months in dx12 and 11. That's why I'm having trouble with this choice.

he's right about this though...reference design cards run hot and loud,..especially the reference version of the RX 480 that's complete crap.

Truth is those cards are very similar in performance RX 480/GTX 1060/GTX 980 they trade blows the GTX 980 has overall a bit more punch but it lacks the VRAM and it's an older product i would go with the cards you can get your hands on that is:

A- a better more higher end model

B- is cheaper than the other...

Glad we could sort this out guys, good talk.

no problem, feel free to ask if you have more questions...RX 480 is certainly a very nice mid-range product from AMD and for 1080p gaming it will have a nice run i'm sure.

Nope, he's wrong. With the exception of games with bad DX 12 implementation like bf1, the 480 is faster in every DX 12 game except 2 that are both Gameworks games.
