Shouldn't MSI GS63VR be on the guide?, IMO it's better than Asus GL502.

It's a great portable option but its so expensive its not good gaming value.  It's priced a bracket too high.  It has a 1060 when all the competition has a 1070.  I do mention it seperately if you need something portable.

If you see it for under 1500 though let me know.  (That goes for anyone reading this I'll update the post with any good sales).

Thanks for the guide, it confirmed a lot of things I was researching.

Trying to decide now between p650hp6 (which screen?), or gt62vr :\

@edit1754 Does the GS63VR from Best Buy have a crappier screen or something?  I feel like you said something like that.

They both will perform about the same (assuming same gpu) so I would pick whether some portability is more important or absolutely maximizing performance.

Yeah that's what I thought.  I still want @edit1754 's opinion because he's the expert on displays.  It may be worse but still decent enough for 1400 to be a good deal.

Sager NP8157/Clevo P650HS (17" version here) - Full diclosure I own this one.  It's a pretty great value machine starting at 1600 with a 1070.  Options are fully open here.  You can get a 4K GSync display, overclockable 7820hk cpu, there are 4 ram slots, and 4 storage slots like the P650RP6.  It also has a SABRE DAC which is an advantage over it's little brother.  This one is also thinner than the Asus GL502VS which sports a 1070 (1.1" vs 1.2").  Clevo also has access to a lot of resellers, and thermal pastes and the Prema bios mod are available options (with the @Prema bios being a unique bios for Clevo's).  It's a lean mean customizable machine.  RGB keyboard present.  (Owner's lounger here)

I am looking for portable gaming laptop. My initial choice was MSI GS63VR .. But as you have mentioned this Sager NP8157 is certainly a great value for money. And to mention it comes with a 1070 too. But is it capable of cooling down the 1070. The MSI itself gets pretty hot with the 1060. So are there any thermal issues or throttling? There might be other posts/forums regarding this, but since you own this I thought I would be getting the better reply here. Also in the guide you haven't included this in the portable section. Is it too bulkier than the MSI ? You can also suggest any other laptops. I also looked at the Asus Gl702VS DB-74. But it seems there is an issue with the power adapter not being able to supply enough power. Does this problem also exists in the new Kaby-lake models ?

Also if I am getting a NP8157, which one should I probably get? I am really confused between the Sager/Clevo/EluktronicsP650. What are the differences between these models and they all look similar except the logos, Will there be any difference in build quality coz the Eluktronics is slightly cheaper. And is it necessary to apply any thermal compound ? I know its a lot of questions, sorry for that. Thanks in Advance.

Edit : The EVOC also has one..!!!

MSI GT73VR - 120Hz 1080p display, and finally more storage options makes this a solid MSI machine.  Though the cpu is still mobile it supports 4 storage drives, and 4 ram slots.  Importantly, it can either take a 1080, or 1070 sli.  Though 1070 sli is way over 3000 it is something you could consider doing down the line.  It's also built like a tank.  (Owner's lounge here)

incorrect information please update.

I do think its a good review, it address and compares both Alienware 17 R4 and MSI GT73VR (6RF Titan Pro) both in under $3000 category. thus post should be updated.

Glam this is a amazing thread and I do hope that you keep this updated. Its a great thread that answers majority of questions buyers have.

I'll edit it I suppose but it still isnt completely wrong.  The build quality is well above average but it does have a couple weak points.  The Alienware 17 is the best built on the entire market, doesnt mean its the only one that's any good.  I've spoken with iunlock about it.  Tank is a bit of an exaggeration though.

So I didn't include it in the portable section because the GS63 is thinner.  However, it isn't that thick.  It's the thinnest laptop in my opinion that can correctly cool a 1070.

The Clevo P650 is just sold by a lot of people which is why there are so many sellers.  I'd advise getting a good price on one through eluktronics or getting one from a reseller like GenTechPC who offers liquid ultra thermal compound which should make temps really good.

The Evoc P650 is probably the best because HID tests their machines well, but it's more expensive.

Not sure about the GL702, it needed a larger power supply.  I kind of ignore that notebook because it cant cool itself.

I wouldn't get it from GenTech. The Prema bios is really worth it. I didn't notice before. Until I realize my 1070 is always throttled on my AW cause TDP limited.

I mean my 1070 is still working fine without the Prema bios right now (when is it releasing?), it crushes games.  It's hard to decide for a non-power user whether the significantly better temps with liquid ultra are worth it over the Prema bios.  It's only useful if you're going to use it.

That's fair. I think it's coming??? IK Mr. Fox has a working copy. Isn't it released??? I think you need to ask your retailer to remote flash it. And yes non-power users will hardly notice until the 1070 is getting slow. Then they'll notice that they can't get another year out of it. Temps I feel like are more subjective. I always praise low temps, but everyone always thinks its about OC. For me it's more about fan noise. Liquid metal can drive down fan levels crazy.

OH 1 thing I saw that was pretty cool was some guy on NBR trying to like fix the broken ass HDT heatsink design of the new Razer Blade by filling it with like a mixture of IC Diamond and something. And sanding down the heatpipes. Lowered temps to like mid 80s. Was pretty cool.

It's out for the P870 and Mr. Fox's 16L13.  No one on a P650 has it yet as far as I know.

Also christ, all that work just for mid 80s?  I would hope something like that would drop it to upper 70s.  Still good though.

Time to tell Prema to move his ass. If he can make the 16L13 this fast, then the P650 should be done. But <3 Prema.

Also, it's quite interesting that a company chooses to use HDT still on bare die. I don't even think it's cheaper, just perplexing. If it had a normal heatsink, liquid metal could do wonders, cept that charger is still inadequate for the 1060 and Razer custom bios throttles all it's components cause Razer.

Intel uses what they do because it's supposed to last basically forever. They dont' care about thermals of it or if it's actually good with their new chips they just know it lasts a long time so they use it.

It uses the LG LP156WF6-SPK1 according to this review which isn't awful in the way today's lower-end TN panels are, but lacks the 97% sRGB / 72% aRGB gamut, higher contrast, and lower response time, of the Samsung LTN156HL01-104 used in the normal GS63VR models.

DO you know if the 1080p screen of the EVOC P750DM2-G is good?

It's the same LG panel he just mentioned.   So not bad, kinda poor for an IPS but it's still IPS.

Thanks @Galm .. I just want it to be comfortable enough to carry it to work daily. And I am getting the laptop from India and Sager does not have International Warranty. Should I be worried ? What would be the probability of me getting one that needs replacement? So with that in mind, I might be getting one from the HID to be on the safer side.

Is that thermal compound a one time thing or it should be applied frequently ? Because I am not sure if I could get it here in my place if it needs to be applied. If needs to be applied, how will I know when it needs to be applied.? If I am getting liquid ultra while buying, can I change the thermal compound later ?

Edit : 120Hz display is available only in TN Panel. Is that TN Panel good or should I get the IPS ? 120Hz display is worth while getting a 1070 right?

Thanks @Galm .. I just want it to be comfortable enough to carry it to work daily. And I am getting the laptop from India and Sager does not have International Warranty. Should I be worried ? What would be the probability of me getting one that needs replacement? So with that in mind, I might be getting one from the HID to be on the safer side.

HID is easily the best if your international and have the money for it.  There international warranty is great but costly.  I would say get it if you can.

Thermal compound would be applied by who you buy it through (btw there may be Indian Clevo resellers that are cheaper).  It may not last forever, but it'll last for quite a while.  Usually you can just forget about it unless your laptops temps start rising.

The 120Hz panel is very good for a TN.  It can't match the colors of IPS or the viewing angles, but it's better than most other TNs on the laptop market and is much smoother and snappier for gaming.
