Asus FX502VM-AH51 - Core i5-6300HQ, 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD - $919

MSI GP62MVR Leopard Pro-048 - Core i7-6700HQ, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD - $999, but $899 after $100 mail-in rebate.

Personal opinion, I much rather pay for a discounted i5+1050ti Dell 7567 and DIY replace the screen with a good Sharp one. Brings the cost to about $900-950. A heavily OCed 1050ti comes within 20% to the thermally and tdp limited 1060 3gb of the two options above. And also I think quality of life is significantly higher on the Dell 7567 with a much better keyboard and trackpad and speakers and battery life. The throttled to hell 1060 consistently falls to around heavily OCed 980m performance levels because of how limited it is. So a heavily OCed 1050ti is about maybe 30-40% better than a 970m bringing it surprisingly close.

Both of the above options are very much more focused on performance per dollar over quality of life to the point where I think, yes games will have a higher FPS, but i will feel like shit using one of those two. Especially the FX502. The MSI one is suprisingly better. The GP series have caught up to where the GE series was last gen and the GE series is actually rather decent this gen but doesn't have a place in the market with it's weird pricing.

Thoughts?

I don't like the Asus at all.  But I think the GP62 is good enough.  It's basically a GE62 at this point.  The keyboard and screen are both pretty decent.  For 900 bucks I definitely think it's a great deal.  The 7567 isn't like incredibly well built or anything I'd say it's the same league as the MSI.  Again, still wouldn't get the Asus just listed it because it was cheaper without the mail and rebate.

The GE series is worthless.  The Clevo P650 and even Asus GL502VM (again not a fan) over shadow it price and performance wise.

So I like this GP series pricing.

These laptops do use low quality TN displays, however to buy one of these laptops alongside a replacement IPS panel is still cheaper than all the GTX 1060 models I know of that come with good displays.

nah GP series uses the 1080 ips in most versions. it's the issue with everything else. poor cooling. shit internal design. shit quality of life. I've used a FX502 at a store just for shits and nah, not worth it. Unless you're aiming for MAX fps per dollar, it's not a good laptop to use.

@edit1754 I am confused actually.  The sale price seems to be a TN, but I usually have seen GP62s with IPS, so idk what's up with that.

The GP62 cooling is almot literally just a gimped GE62.  Not sure why that's where they decided to cut corners of all places.

Yea same. I swear it switches from "LCD" to "IPS". I think it's one of those discount deals with big retailers again.

The GP62 cooling

Cooling isn't bad tbh. It's about the same as the GE60. You know how in the GP Maxwell gen, they would only use ONE bloody heatsink with 2 heatpipes for the entire CPU and GPU cooling array. Now it's like every other laptop with 2 heatisnks and 2 heatpipes like the GE series.

The only review I can find on it is Toms Hardware, and gpu load only without cpu hit 87C.  That's pretty bad lol.

But there aren't other reviews.

I mean, that's within the realm of fixable. A quick repaste will drop that thing to low 80s. It's not terrible compared to say FX502 series which gets jacked to like 95C just like it's GL502 brethen. This is purely budget comparison here. Like yes it's terrible, but compared to more terrible budget options I'm just saying the GP Pascal series isn't THAT bad.

Calling it. GT72VR chassis with a socket incoming? With a 1080 option? This would be pretty cool. I'd personally pick this over the P775DM2. Quality of life just so much higher.

yes right now it's still bga but maybe eurocom is working on that socket?

wtf is that...  It's a server only unit?  6 storage drives?

I had heard rumors about a GT83 socketed barebones, nothing about a GT72.  Interesting.

I'm pretty sure Eurocom confirmed they were working on this one. I just didn't like it LOL. I much rather they work on the GT72VR chassis (I don't like the GT73VR chassis because it's designed for 1070 SLI so unless that thing can go 1080SLI with socket then nah, prefer the GT72VR chassis with socket + 1080N)

I know the -248 model @Microcenter lists IPS but a review on the listing confirmed it not to be. I've seen the -218 model list IPS on either Newegg or Amazon, but I think I saw someone over at /r/MSILaptops who bought it and it also wasn't (I'll have to find that post). The -406 model may have listed IPS somewhere too, but the thing about the -218 model makes me doubt it, so it might be worth confirming that one too. The -406 model also usually costs as much as a Clevo P650HP3, which might be a better choice regardless.

In addition for the FX502VM, it can be confusing, since it's listed on Amazon as a hybrid listing with it and the ZX53VW. The ZX53VW is IPS (and 512GB SSD) but only a 960M, whereas the FX502VM is 1060 but uses a low quality TN panel.

@Galm Heyo! Sorry to bother you or anything. I really love the guide and I find it completely helpful especially to a newbie who's trying to find great laptops. Anyway, I'm currently on the hunt to find a new laptop and I wouldn't mind some help. :)

P.S. I posted a 'Need Help Thread' about a week ago, maybe this may help. Here it is!

Basically it went like this:

Spoiler

Hey guys! My current (trash) laptop is almost giving up - it's giving me enough time to research and prepare for its inevitable end. I'm mainly looking for a good gaming laptop that ranges from $1000 - $1400 (the cheaper the better of course) that could last me for about 3 to 5 years, just enough time to save for another one. I'll be in college soon enough and I might need something that's fast enough to handle both school work and games.

P.S. I'm from the Philippines so it might be hard for me to get the best laptops out there - and I'm not big on buying online unless it's 100% trusted. Andf yes I've read the laptop recommendations.

More Info: (Got this template from reddit but didn't get much attention there)

Spoiler

Hi guys, so I've been planning on buying a new laptop by the end of this year with early 2018 being the latest. I just want to plan ahead just so that I can get ready. Thanks in advance :)

  • Total budget and country of purchase:

I live in the Philippines, and my estimated budget would be around $1000 - $1400/$1500 (although the cheaper the better of course). One good thing to note, I'm not too keen on ordering online but I do have relatives in Manila (which usually sells most of the laptops in the market found here in PH).

  • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications to your requirements for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I'd love a decent battery life but I'm leaning more on the specs - all of this of course should be justified by the price.

  • How important is weight to you?

Don't really mind but I would love it if it were not *that* heavy.

  • Which OS do you require? Windows, Linux, Mac.

Definitely Windows.

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

N/A (although I do love streaming on my laptop, so maybe that might affect my choices)

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. If you have no requirements, put N/A.

I'm fond of video editing, I usually use Sony Vegas Pro.

  • If you're gaming (leave blank if you put N/A above...), do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Yes I LOVE GAMING. I'm into League of Legends or mostly any MMORPGs like RIFT and World of Warcraft. I don't have much knowledge about the ideal FPS but 60 is enough I guess - although I wouldn't mind it being better.

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable business grade build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Decent keyboard would be nice, although I don't really need anything else just that it can last for at least 3 to 5 years (just enough for me to save money again or find a job).

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Anyway, I'm hoping that I'll be able to buy something that could at least get me through college (which is about 5 years from now).

Thanks for taking the time to read my request. Hoping for some awesome answers and discussions. Cheers!

P.S. I might have missed some important notes/ideas so feel free to clarify stuff :)

I could probably find some MSI or Asus (even HP or Acer) laptops here in my country. Clevo/Sager though might require me to order online, so I'm trying to avoid that. Hope that helps :)

I more meant prices.  An MSI GT62 is within budget in the U.S.  Is it where you are?

Sorry, I should have probably removed that from the spoilers and added it into my new comment. I'm aiming for the $1000-$1400/1500 range. The cheaper the better though.

...  No no...  You said you aren't in the U.S. right?  The Philippines probably has some price inflation compared to us.  So I'm saying what can you buy within budget.  Try to link me to an MSI GT62VR with a GTX 1060 from where you are.  Because that's quite likely different from prices in the U.S. after converting the currencies or whatever.  Even if it is the same or you can buy from the U.S. it would probably cost a lot to ship it to you.

That clears things up! Thanks for putting up with me. Here you go, the price of MSI GT62VR with a GTX 1060 with respect to PH pricing. Although 88k does seem a bit out of my budget. I'm shooting for 50k to 70k unless the laptop is that good and can last long (around 3 to 5 years).

Yeah so it seems you may be limited to 1050 Ti laptops instead of 1060s.  The GE62 with a 1050 Ti isn't bad.

Although if ever I would try to increase my budget, will laptops with GTX 1060 last me longer? I'm currently eyeing the Dell Inspiron 15 7000, but I'm generally leaning on towards the MSI one.

The 1060 is noticeably faster, so it is better.  Check out some benchmarks to see if it's worth it.  Also note the Dell does have kind of a crappy TN display.

Noted. Did some research and saw some reviews. The difference is noticeably big. Do you by any chance recommend any particular brand? Thanks by the way!

The MSI GT62VR and Clevo P650HP6 are two of the best all around machines that should be well cooled.

Hopefully I'll be able to get my hands on one. Although, are there other alternatives that might just be as good? Just in case they're not available.
