Anyone have a Mac?

I have a mac book pro from 2008 and a Mac Pro 3,1 from 2008 as well. Here are my two cents. Yes they have there place and yes they are expensive. I would normally recommend them if someone is going to college BUT. Big BUT on this one. They haven't released new mac pros in over 3 years now which is utter nonsense. Shows how much they care. Everything else like the 5K are pure garbage that thermal throttle and have no user upgrade ability outside of RAM. When they went trash can with the mac pros they were done. Now with the introduction of the mac book pros it keeps getting more sad. Yes the only type C is a hot topic but the other problems it has like the wrong battery because they had problems but felt it was better to rush the product out then have a proper battery designed for it. Outside of the mac book pros don't even bother. The macbooks are unpowered overpriced chromebooks. The airs well they are dead. Basically Apple is sinking in my eyes. With problems that shouldn't exist the consumers are going to catch on.

Just keeping this here as a Although I managed to get it for $300.

I got my first modern Mac a few months ago (a 2015 MacBook Pro). I come from Windows and while there's no way in hell I'd ever give up my Windows machines I could definitely see the case to be made for switching from Windows to a Mac. I had been using older Macs for a while before I got this MacBook and I really liked them, but I never imagined comparing them to my modern Windows machines simply because they're old.

 

I like how fast, fluid and smooth macOS runs, I like how most software runs well (keyword: most) and I love the build quality of the hardware. Apple seems to be the only one who's gotten nearly perfect screen hinges on their laptops. I also quite like the Force Touch trackpad, mostly for the fact that it has an even click all over the touchpad. With the non-force trackpads, the click was a lot better at the bottom of the touchpad than the top, but with the Force Touch trackpads it's even everywhere which is really my favourite thing about it. Besides that, I make heavy use of the touchpad gestures which are all very nice to use.

 

Battery life in my MacBook is also excellent, though I'm aware that many PC laptops can match or exceed it. 

 

There are a lot of other things that I like (and plenty of things that I don't like but can't really name off the top of my head because it's mostly nitpicking) and while I still think that it was overpriced and too expensive, I don't think that it's severely overpriced.

I used to. I got the 2011 MacBook Air back when I was in college and I gotta admire OS X's smoothness in executing my school stuff. The build quality is top notch, the multi-touch trackpad is the best (no Windows laptop comes close), the battery life when I got it brand new was legit 8-10 hours battery life, and OS X has less annoying updates unlike Windows. I was planning to get ine in 2016 but was disappointed in their lineup so I hope 2017 is when Apple decides to "Make Macs Great Again".

I have the base model 2014 mac mini and I love it. It isn't the greatest value but it has a really nice design, and a small form factor. It only has 4gb of ram but that can go a lot further than one would expect. It can use Autodesk Maya surprisingly well and video editing isn't bad but render times take forever. It's surprisingly snappy for a 5400rpm drive on MacOS but on windows, that's a different story. Still, I'm very happy to have it.

Really?  IBM, was making, metal bodies laptops before they where bought my Lenovo, and other brands had them as well.  When apple used SSD's PC laptops where right behind them.  Battery life on PC laptops, where never quite as good, as apple but close depending on the laptop (There are non apple laptops that have better battery life out now).  However that track pad, no other laptop comes close.

Got myself a 2012 macbook pro (non-retina one) after its release. 

Upgraded the 5400 rpm HDD to a samsung SSD. And upgraded the ram to 8GB. 

Apple is just like coin that you are holding in your hand. It is double sided. With some huge advantages there comes a lot of disadvantages. 

  1. The machine flies through everyday tasks. Also OS wise, I prefer macOS than windows. The trackpad and those gestures are a huge helper when it comes to navigate/control in OS. 
  2. Build quality is top notch. (It is an expensive machine.) I installed windows 7 on my macbook pro via bootcamp. After installation I realised how washed up my old lenovo Y460P's screen was. When using macOS I did not notice. But after switching to windows, I can clearly see that the color accuracy and viewing angel is so much better when compared to my old windows laptop.
  3. Battery life is good. No doubt about that. 
  4. The keyboard is top-notch. A lot of mac users are hesitating buying the new macbook pros (2016 ones) because they  prefer older keyboard. This alone can tell you how good the keyboards are. 
  5. They have higher resale value than windows pc. But 1st of all they are way pricier than windows laptop. And from what I've heard they last longer. (Again, some people might disagree here. But that's what I knew. )      (See point 1 below)
  6. Apple's customer service is top notch. As long as you are using a hardware/software from apple, you can get all the answer you want from them. They will not brush you off with excuses. And yes, for their service they charge you top dollar (when you ask them to repair your hardware and the hardware is out of warranty) , but at least you get the best customer service in the industry.If you want to just ask some info/have some doubts about your device, it is free.  I have called their help center several times regarding my iphone and my mac, they listen to your description and provide you information in order to help you to solve the issue. Their online helping center is great too. (See point 2 below)

Okay. So, how about the cons?

  1. They are expensive. Like, really expensive when compared to windows laptops. (Some said that they are well built, some disagree.) I personally think that they are. For half the price you can get a windows laptop with good build quality. 
  2. No user-upgradability AT ALL. Like 0. You bought the machine, you use it, but don't even think about upgrading it yourself. I knew that some site like i fixit will tell you it is easy to upgrade, but seeing the trend apple is going, the hardware is basically only apple serviceable. Means that you better take your machine to apple store and let them fix it for you. Mine is fairly old, I can still open it and swap out the big parts (Ram, SSD, HDD etc) but nowadays you can't even put it back once you opened it, it is all glued up. Obviously apple do this to make sure they are the one that will profit from their machine. 
  3. That is all I can think of. 

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.
