LG 5K Thunderbolt Display Designed specifically to work with MacBook Pro doesn't work if your router is next to it...

Well this is an interesting fail. A new report seems to indicate that the LG UltraFine 5K Thunderbolt monitor which was develop with the help of Apple cannot function if you have a wireless router close by. Apple decided to stop making its own display and work with another manufacture to make new Thunderbolt displays "Designed for MacBook Pro's"

LG recommends to keep any wireless router away from the monitor by 2 meters. If the wireless router is close by, the interference makes the display flicker.

LG says that this problem does not happen with any of its other monitors. The company shared no info if they plan to fix the issue.

Do you think LG will look into it, or the low sale (which I am assuming by their reaction) will just make them keep the recommendation?

But this is interesting issue. I wonder if it has to do with Thunderbolt getting interference, or some other components inside the monitor that needs shielding and wasn't, as the high bandwidth effect with wireless signal was not considered as 5K monitors are just new. If it Thunderbolt, then it is something to consider for those with external GPUs now and later.

LG said that there will be a new revision of the monitor, where they include additional shielding material in the monitor to fix the problem, and apologies for this issue.

So if you plan on getting this monitor, be SURE to get the latest revision of it (March production), and not fall with the older one.

Apple's recent shortcomings belong on /r/crappydesign. I know this may be an LG issue, but it was intended for Apple so..

Sigh, lemme guess, some people are going to blame Apple for this fail...how I cannot wait...

 

Anyway, come on LG, you're telling me that you've known this problem but didn't fix it? What are you doing? I don't care how many people are actually going to buy this display but god dammit, you're as bad as EA...

sounds like the usb 3.0 bug with the 2.4 ghz causing wifi interference.

Umm guys I think you're missing the point of this amazing feature.

It's actually made like that so people won't be too close to their routers, therefore the american goverement wont be able to read your thoughts with radio waves.

 

You should thank Apple and LG for this, it's not a bug, it's a feature!

At least in New york city,  both apt sizes and the walls lending to poor wireless strength,  most people keep their routers and computers in the same spot.

I would say that most people probably keep their routers right beside wherever the hell their internet connection comes in (Eg: Right beside the Coax port or the Phone jack on the wall). I've seen them in all manner of places. Under couches. On side tables. On the floor. Beside the computer. etc

 

I would say that many of those people have their computers within 2m of the router, but certainly not all. And I wouldn't even venture a guess as to what percentage do this. Less than half? I have no idea.

QC doesn't test for every scenario, and there really shouldn't be any reason for any of LG's tech to experience this issue when it doesn't with their other products.

Interesting as there are EMV (EMC in Englich?) rules you have to pass in order to sell a product.

It does not only test how much a device radiates but also the immunity to all kinde of electromagnetic signals. I wonder how they passed the test....

 

Also immunity is closely related to radiation, so expect this thing to affect your WLAN as well.

Mineral oil and 40 kg aluminium heat sinks are a perfect combination: 73 cores and a Titan X, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Oil

The standard goes from <50 Hz to >5 GHz and for each frequency slice you have a specific amount of radiation you are allowed to emmit.

 

I'm not sure anymore if passing the test is required to sell it, but everyone knows that you should not sell a product that doesn't pass it if you don't want to have problems.

Yes, but there are various standards at certain frequencies. For example, Bluetooth and Wifi both can operate at 2.4GHz. It's entirely possible that what standards are being used are playing a role, as the issue so far only seems to be triggered when the monitor is within 2 meters of a Wifi AP, but not a word on The MacBook Pro's proximity causing issues with Bluetooth enabled.

BT have a lower overall power compared to WLAN (hower the spectral power desity is about the same).

 

But you are right, someone should take a Mac and stream some files over WLAN in the 2,4 GHz band on a high spped and look what happens...

 

And the EMC standard is made that you don't interfear with BT / WLAN and alike.
