Something That Reminds People to Quote People

Too many times I've seen people who need help and someone replies to them with help and a question but the OP doesn't quote them... In the end, the helper doesn't reply since they never got a notification and OP didn't know they need to quote them since they're new to the forum. It really sucks and leaves the OP confused and helpless. Perhaps during someone's first few posts there should be some sort of an alert that you should quote people or something?

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

Do this:

Quote

And make sure you do it by hitting the quote button at the bottom left of my post, and not the one inside the editor!

Or this:

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Yes, but not everyone reads that. Sometimes people don't bother reading long guides and some people might never even find that post :/. I think it'd be better to tell the user what to do instead having them have to find the tutorial.

Moderators are finding a solution to bring it somewhere accessible. I do agree about that. That's why I have a huge text saying to quote me or tag me in my sig. It works fairly well

Here is something to be sad about. As a result of not quoting people

That happened to me a few times, I would help someone then forgot about it.

I don't do it everytime but I now try to "follow" the threads when I'm helping, at least I'm getting the notifications :P

I know it's not perfect but it's really up to the OP to quote others when they're asking for help.

If you need help with your forum account, please use the Forum Support form !

Yeah, but not everyone does that :(. Not to mention some people that are really active probably don't want to do that, since then they'll get notification spammed from people replying that might be irrelevant to them.

I just follow threads I reply to if OP has a low post count, so likely isn't too familiar with how the forum works. I wouldn't do it for every post as I'd get a tonne of notifications.

The problem is most people are switching over from Tomshardware forum. Where by default you follow the thread every time you leave a reply to the post so you always get notified.

Along the same lines... is there a way to edit a response you've made to include a quote after the fact?  Several times I've accidentally responded without actually quoting.

The reminders won't do much. We see that already with the formatting reminder. I use activity stream for all threads I've replied but not read yet. I check that once or twice a day.

What I would do is, check back on that thread every so often to see if OP has any replies yet. If there isn't then I won't bother with it because, I see that OP does not really care about their problems. If they do care, they will be really active about it. These mostly comes with those with low post counts.

OP has a problem, you replied with a suggestion. It takes days for them to respond or they're never heard from again. The other thing is to look at is OP is following their threads or not.

Apparently there's a chance that in an upcoming version of the forum, we can have certain thread(s) pinned to the side above recent topics for a while for new users before they automatically go away

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

For some reason it sounds really creepy. A post that goes away suddenly.

This week in haunted forum episode 1...

Maybe send out automatic messages/status update to those who just joined with some important stuff in it

xD maybe I didn't describe it well ... it wouldn't be creepy at all.  You know the "upcoming events" thing on the side on the home page?  It would be a box like that with a link to a post or two, and after a week or two or something, it would just go away for them.

That's a good idea, I feel like that could be done quite easily (but in all fairness I do not know for sure).

Yeah, I have seen lots of forum implementing this already though mostly in a form of welcome message and if they did include something important I would just consider it as trash/spam message

I follow all threads (by default) I intend on helping in. If someone has a good idea as I read through, I just watch and give "thumbs up" or "agree" if everything is relevant and beneficial. If the problem is solved, I will un-follow. Otherwise, there isn't a reason, for me, not to read what the general posts are about.

To be clear, that upcoming version is not even in development at the moment, but they have said that they want to add a "complete your profile" type feature, which I am hoping this would be compatible with.

If they don't add something like that, a welcome guide tour thing is something that I would like to add, but almost certainly won't have time to do.
