Cpu temp with custom loop

So I recently installed my custom loop, and I had been getting CPU temps of 58c at 100% CPU, I just drained my loop to see what the issue was and it turns out the CPU only 3/4 covered in thermal paste, so I'm naturally thinking this is the cause of the high temps?, could this also explain why the temps skyrocket as soon as the CPU goes to 100% the CPU goes straight to it's maxed temp which is 58c

Thoughts on this?

What CPU is it? 58C isn't a terrible temp for the majority of chips, what does your loop consist of? The paste won't have helped, but it won't have caused too much of a difference

I7 7700k, not overclocked, it's just CPU loop, I know it's not terrible but I was using a H115i before this and it was maxing at 48c

Edit: As I said it was only 3/4 covered, so there was quite a bit of metal on metal action, surely that would drive the temp up massively?

When did you put this together? Did you let all of the air bubbles escape? Are you getting enough flow through the loop?

What does your loop consist of? Rads, blocks, pump, fans? It wouldn't have made a massive difference, the heat would still be pulled from the chip, it's just not as efficient, id expect only 3-4C difference

360mm rad, CPU block, pump, res, all the bubbles escapes but it was hard to do that when the res was sideways, what could it be if not the thermal paste?

anyone? does position of the loop make a difference?

No. The ONLY thing that is important regarding the loop position is that your reservoir is above your pump, and this is only important so that when filling the loop the liquid goes to your pump you don't run your pump dry.

If you didn't have all the die covered with thermal paste then this is likely to push your temperatures right up. Reapply thermal paste and get back to us if the temperatures are similar.

I will do, just stripped everything now rebuilding with different layout

I was just thinking, would it be stupid to fit the 360 rad externally?

No, I have an internal and external rad. Just do make sure you have atleast one fan in your case though, you do want some airflow over your ram, mobo and drives.

Honestly those temps aren't terrible, my 4790k @ 4.7ghz runs around 50C whilst gaming but I have 240 thick + 360 XT45mm rads. Also what fans are you using? The fans on the Corsair AIO's are usually quite loud but move a lot of hair. That paste won't make a huge difference I guarantee it, as I said earlier 2 - 4C I reckon, infact i'm sures theres a vlog somewhere with someone using toothpaste as a thermal paste and the difference wasn't as vast as you would think.

I wouldn't worry about moving your rad outside the case, your temps are perfectly fine, and its not worth the cosmetic downgrade (imo) of having the rad mounted externally. Also check your board isn't throwing more volts down the vcore

Finished the rebuild. and I'm still getting 55c, this layout has 7 extra fans the other layout had 3, which was the radiator fans, how can it be so hot? I know it's not a bad temp, but how do I justify spending £400 on a custom loop if my £110 AIO does a better job? is the cosmetic of a custom loop really worth that £300 and 10c degree more than the AIO?

Got to say I'm pretty pissed off if I'm honest, it's worse than it was last time, I'm getting high 50s now just for GTA V at 50% CPU usage, and 41c at idle, this is beyond ridiculous, if I can't sort this out i'm going back to AIO no way can I justify spending £300-£400 more for a worse performing custom loop, my AIO was 37c in GTA V, this is 53. that's 16c MORE, the CPU temp spikes to 55c almost immediately and stays there.

Did you check the voltages? 41C idle seems high, mine sits at 30C right now and its in the loop with a 1080GTX and the motherboard VRMS (admittedly I have 2 rads). Are you certain your you have flow? What speeds are the fans running when stressing the CPU? Can you post a picture of your loop ? I'd like to help get this sorted, hate seeing disgruntled custom water coolers!

Not sure what you mean voltages, my CPU is not overclocked, I'm sure I have flow? I got a manual and it told me which way to attach the tubes so I did that correctly?, I'm not sure what speed the fans are running how do I check that?

Sure, it'll be a bad picture though as my camera is broken

Edit: Can't find my phone mate it's 2 am and I'm knackered, but if this helps: NZXT 440 case, with the 360 Rad on the front, Pump on the case floor next to rad with res attached to the radiator, then obviously CPU block

You not have a phone? A custom loop should not have higher temps than an AIO, unless something is wrong somewhere. Some motherboards will have the vcore setting default as auto, which will cause it to add voltage as the CPU boosts, making the CPU hotter. The fans will be controlled via the bios if theyre PWM, there should be a setting in there to plot fan speeds vs cpu temperature - aka as the CPU heats up, the fans speed up, I have my pump on the same config. Quickest way to check for flow would be to crack the drain with the PC running (into a jug or something lol!)

Quickest way to check for flow would be to crack the drain with the PC running (into a jug or something lol!)

Yeah I do have a phone but I'm tired as hell and can't be arsed to find it, I don't know anything about BIOS but I dont understand why voltage would go up if I'm switching from AIO to custom loop? I haven't touched BIOS so.., also I did check BIOS today and I never saw anything about vcore or even fan speed,

Do I have the flow right?

I would look at some guides on setting up a bios for watercooling. Can you explain to me how you filled your loops please, like exactly :)

Guides? what do you mean guides? what does BIOS have to do with WC when I can go back to AIO right now and see 10-20c less without doing anything to BIOS? & erm ok, Fill res, turn on pump, turn off pump so theres about 1 inch of fluid, rinse and repeat till res fluid no longer goes down

Ok that tells me you have flow :)

Because you need to set the fan/pump curve profiles for your system. Theres no way your temps should be higher with a custom loop. Can you remember the exact model of your pump and fans? OH and did you check the jet was correct for the 7700k when you fitted the block? Theres different jets for X99 and the others. I'm gonna guess you definitely removed the plastic cover from the block? (not to insult you, weve all made some silly mistakes, infact I did it briefly with my old rig) What paste did you use?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/EK-Water-Blocks-EK-KIT-X360/dp/B00LXIRASS, thats what I used, the jet? is that the thing inside the CPU block? I left the one that already came with it inside was I supposed to switch it out? I'm using B150 Mobo (shh lol), Yes I'm sure the plastic is removed, I used the paste that came with it, then I used Arctic Silver MX-4

Step 2 on the instructions, look at the jet plates, they should be changed depending what CPU socket you are using
