4770k to 7700k

I'm pretty sure my 4770k @ 4.5ghz bottlenecking my Titan X (Pascal) @ 2.1ghz. For regular 60hz I don't think it'd be a problem, but I think my cpu might be limiting me trying to reach 165hz in certain games. You guys think upgrading to a 5.1ghz 7700k would be worth?

No it isn't.

 

There would barely be an improvement going to a 7700K.

It would certainly yield you some performance increase but I'm not sure if that would be worth the money you'd need to spend on an entirely new platform (then again you do have a $1200 GPU so maybe you have the money to do that).

In CPU bound stuff, maybe. Then again, the difference isn't huge.

 

But if OP really wants the best I guess there is no harm in it.

That's an i5, i7's are a different matter, i5 has almost had it's day as the recommended gaming chip, games are now starting to prefer cores/threads.

 

@auraofjason I wouldn't take that plunge. If I were you I would wait and see what Ryzen offers, if it aint great go with a X99 build and get a complete platform upgrade rather than just a chip (aka ddr4, quad channel, multi sli, more PCIE lanes, extra cores etc)

What makes you think a 6600K is going to be able to catch up when at stock clocks, the 4770K is faster than the 6600K by 20%~? (when all 8 of it's threads are utilised)

If you look closely though, that affect isn't created by the chip (well I guess it is technically) the difference between 2133 and 3000 MHz memory in some tests at the same cpu speed is like 20% - personally as you already said, that gain isn't worth it. If it was purely a chip change, it would be, but as I said earlier, if you're gonna swap out memory and mobo, you should just go up a platform:

With that monitor and a Titan X Pascal, yeah, get a 7700k, a high-end board, and the fastest DDR4 you can find. You obviously have lots of money to burn if you're buying that gpu. Get a top of the line liquid cooler too though, because Kaby Lake gets hot AF from what I have read when OC it.

So just an update, I went ahead and went with your suggestion. Got one of the highest end boards and fastest DDR4. I'm getting 20+ fps increases in games like GTA5, which is very nice and noticeable on my 165hz monitor . I got it delidded so it's only 70c at 5.1ghz stress testing.

 

Feels better knowing that I'm getting my moneys worth out of my Titan XP now and not bottlenecking it anymore. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

That's fantastic!  It's also a great example of why you shouldn't sit on the sidelines as some people do theorizing that something won't be better.  They'll hold you back every time.
