HP Laptop Batteries Catching Fire, HP Issues Recall

Source 1: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/728626-hp-laptops-batt OP: suicidalfranco

Source 2: http://www.technobuffalo.com/2017/01/25/hp-laptop-recall-batteries/

  • United States Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a massive recall of HP and Compaq computer batteries this week

    • Includes more than 100,000 laptops

    • Batteries inside the laptop are prone to overheating and causing serious fire hazards

  • US CPSC says this follows an earlier recall that included 41,000 batteries

    • This recall specifically relates to about 101,000 laptops sold with Panasonic battery cells in laptops under the HP, Compaq, HP ProBook, HP ENVY, Compq Presario and HP Pavilion brand names

  • Laptops were sold between March 2013 and October 2016

    • If your battery doesn’t pop right off the back of your laptop, you should be able to remove the panel underneath your laptop pretty easily

      • Affected batteries measure 8 to 10.5 inches long, 2 inches wide, and about 1 inch high

      • Will be print on each cell that says “HP Notebook Battery”

      • Along with a model number

      • If it reads: 6EBVA, 6DGAL, 6DEMH, 6DEMA, 6CZMB, 6CGFK or 6BZLU, then that’s bad

    • Users should contact HP for a free replacement battery

More Details on Windows 10’s Upcoming ‘Game Mode’

Source 2: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2017/01/windows-10-game-mode-a-free-fps-boost

  • Earlier this month, Microsoft confirmed that the Windows 10 Creators Update coming later this year would include a new feature called “Game Mode”

  • Ars spoke to Kevin Gammill, partner group program manager for the Xbox platform - about what Game Mode was and what to expect

    • Gammill said that when Game Mode is active, the OS will be biased towards allocating CPU and GPU resources to the game

    • For games that are CPU or GPU- bound, Gammill said that Microsoft was seeing framerate improvements of 2 to 5 percent

  • Game Mode will work for both traditional Win32 games and new Universal Windows Platform (UWP) games

    • Gammill said both types of games will see gains, but that UWP games may see slightly better numbers

    • Win32 games can do things like create multiple processes or install background services, and these are invisible to Game Mode so they may not be properly optimized

  • The Creators Update will ship with a periodically updated whitelist of known games for automatically enabling Game Mode

I can see people freaking out over hearing he used tap water and passed it off as distilled, but I think a lot of people don't realize quite how good their water actually is.  I've tasted distilled, reverse osmosis, very good tap water, and not so good tap water, and the tap water in and around Vancouver and theirs tastes like distilled water.  It really is that good.

On the show in reference to Game Mode you were saying that a frame rate increase of 2 - 5% is not worth it, paraphrasing here. But for this kind of thing what you should be looking at are frame times and frame pacing.

Because if the OS is throwing enough interrupts at the game to effect average frame rates by 2% - 5% you can be damn sure that frame times are suffering a hell of a lot more. Because an average frame rate of 60fps doesn't matter much if your getting stalls down to 30fps on a semi regular occasion.

All the other stuff you and Wendell were saying though was spot on.

Worth mentioning that despite coming with PowerDVD, the software doesn't yet support UHD BD anyways. Why would anyone in their right mind buy one of these drives along with a brand new PC when you can buy an xbone s for the same price as just a drive?

Make a new thread. You can use a Xeon on that mobo and be on par with around an i3 6100 and get good performance at 1080p out of that 1050.
