Homeserver

Hey,

 

I would like to build a homeserver to do various tasks:

1. Backup files on a weekly basis (with ecc and Raid)

2. Gitblit-server

4. A small Website

and

3. A small gaming Server for me and my friends.

 

I am not able to go over €800 and created a sketch on pcpartpicker:

The problem is I am unsure about the RAM. I looked at the memory compatibility list of the mainboard for ecc and the serial number checks, but I think the price is too low.

 

Also, I am unsure if I need a GPU. I plan to control the Server over ssh and could use my Gaming GPU for first time setup.

As an OS I thought I would use Debian as I have used Raspbian but Debian seems to be much more complicated. Is there a good guide for first time setup or a better OS?

 

I would really appreciate if someone could look at the build and confirm compatibility and answer my questions.

Okay, most motherboards and cpus have onboard graphics but xeon and server grade gear doesn't, but soem have.

It sound like you need Proxmox so you can viritulize and run one Freenas server with plugins to do the backup and a lightweight linux distro to run appache 2 on, i would use CentOs.

Memory looks fine, its listed as ECC and is in the QVL for the motherboard.

 

You will need a GPU yes, the Xeon does not come with any integrated GPU.

 

Im not really a Debian guru but if you plan to host many "servers" from one box you might want to look into virtulization (ESXi, Xenserver etc).

Agreed.

Although server boards do have iGPUs built into the mobo this isn't a server board so no iGPU chip for you, lol

 

ESXi is free and pretty simple and straightforward to install and setup VMs ontop of.

As for a GPU would a small nvidia gt (710 to 730) be enough?

Yah, some cheap $10 GPU will be plenty since you are going to be accessing everything either via SSH or remotely through the ESXi GUI once it's setup and installed
