Hoping to die just to replace.

as some of you may do from time to time is plan what you will be adding to your computer next and it got me thinking what part of your computer do you want to die to give you a good reason to upgrade?

look forward to seeing what you guys come up with.

My three 1920x1080@60 monitors so that I can buy three 3840x2160@60 monitors. 

 

It's unheard of, but maybe my PURE ROCK. I'd replace it with some water-cooling, though I upgrade and change GPUs on a weekly basis.

I actually have a hard drive in the process of slowly dying a painful and gruesome death right now. The replacement is already ordered and should be here by Wednesday.

 

Not so much as an "upgrade" though. The dying drive is a WD Green 3TB HDD. The replacement is a Toshiba 3TB HDD. The Toshiba is mildly faster in performance (The WD Green drives are "5400 class", whereas the Toshiba is a 7200 RPM drive).

None, my machine may be old, but it has too much sentimental value for me to 'want a part of it to die'.

I really, really want my GTX 970 G1 Gaming to die. Because:

• It runs close to its power limit, with a 25MHz OC reuiring the power to be set at 112%
• Its small fans run at a very high RPM and therefore mimic Delta's in regards to noise
• It runs hot, and puts out a similar amount of heat to an R9 290X (yes, its really that poorly binned/not binned at all)
• Its permanently stuck at PCIe x8 on all motherboards (while my old "can barely play Oblivion at minimum" PCX 5750 isn't), and I don't know why

Everything else is fine. I've already had 1x 4GB stick of RAM die, leaving me at 4GB and with an excuse to upgrade to a faster kit.

 

Edit: And I've recently had my AIO (a mediocre Siedon 120V Rev 1.0) die, so I have a reason to replace it (and had a reason to mod an LGA775 only cooler to fit the larger LGA1150).

i understand that, you spend alot of time working on your computer and getting the money for the parts i went though that with my first build, for the most part i would love it if nothing in any of my computers very died but if my h80i died it wouldnt worry to much would give me a reason to go custom water cooling but until then im happy with my setup. R.I.P to your 3tb WD Green drive, you going to give it a 21 gun salute? lol

Heh... considering that it's literally impossible for me to change it preemptively, as the replacement isn't due to arrive until Wednesday.

 

Furthermore, the dying drive has been in storage for some time, and was working in full condition when last in use. When I started putting together my new server (6x 3TB drives in FreeNAS), I discovered the WD Green was dying, and thus immediately ordered a replacement.

 

Of course, had this been a production environment at work, we'd already have a replacement on hand in hot standby most likely. But for a home server, I do not keep spare drives on hand.

Best case, I pull it apart for the magnets. Most likely, it'll go into a stack and eventually be sent to the e-recycler. I'm not really that big on keeping dead computer parts around for sentimental reasons or decorative reasons. I have enough clutter, don't need to add more

That 3TB drive was actually the first 3TB drive I ever bought. I think I've had it for like... 5 years now at minimum. First HDD failure I've had in about 3 years. I still have 2x Seagate 3TB drives, my 3x brand new Toshiba 3TB drives, and another Toshiba drive in the mail. The 2x Seagate drives are also pretty old, but are both newer than the WD Green.

My motherboard. Sucks for overclocking, doesnt support 125W AM3+ chips, and the processor in it is kind of terrible so I'd be able to upgrade my processor while I change motherboards.

Funny I had my 3TB green die too. Also mildly faster is not mildly at all. The difference will scare you

I genuinely need to replace my 7950 (it artifacts in unusual ways, makes POST fail a few times per week). But I'm not going to until it actually fully dies and DOESN'T come back like it tends to do.

Both it and my 775 mobo have had the "drag across carpet and let sit for a few days so it works again" treatment.
