how do u tell if wifi is 2.4ghz or 5ghz??

Run this in command prompt:  

netsh wlan show interfaces

 

if the channel is 1-15 then it's 2.4 ghz. If it's 3 digits it's 5 ghz.

Some devices (e.g smartphones) will tell you which frequency the WiFi network is on in the information/details menu.

 

If you are talking about the router side...check the admin settings -- you can typically toggle between the two frequencies.

 

Other then that (I can think of at the moment)...

802.11a  (oldest of the bunch...and slow) >> 5 GHz

802.11ac >> 5 GHz

802.11g >> 2.4 GHz

802.11n >> 2.4 GHz

802.11b >> 2.4 GHz

Like the others said you can check in those ways but if your devices are not choosing the the 5ghz network over the 2.4ghz one you could set different ssid so they show up as different networks.

Then you connect to the 5ghz one manually but also have the other one saved so when you are out of range for the 5ghz you connect to the 2.4ghz - in theory, depends on device but i think most go for the strongest connection once connected do check again until disconnected.

.11n exists on both 5Ghz and 2.5Ghz.  I'm on a -n 5Ghz network right now.

Put your hand in front of the router.  5GHz feels a lot warmer than 2.4GHz

 

 

 

Joking aside, install "Wifi Analyzer" on your smartphone and use that to check them both (assuming your smartphone supports 5GHz, of course).  Gives you a good chance to determine the best channel for your wireless too.
