Windows 10 advertise MS shopping extension to Chrome users

A recent update has apparently started advertising the Microsoft Personal Shopping Chrome extension if Chrome is pinned on the taskbar. Windows 10 ad-centric behavior is becoming a bit more annoying IMO.

I understand they want to get in on the whole "ad industry", but natively including ads in Windows in this manner is a very bad idea. Does that mean we'll need new software to block ads within Windows itself now???

Microsoft really wants you to install and use its products on your computer. Beyond the myriad Start menu ads plaguing Windows 10, now users have to contend with pop-ups for Redmond-made stuff if they have Google's Chrome browser installed as well.

Quote

The add-on itself has been around for about a year, but a recent update is triggering the spam. Expectedly, the Chrome Web Store is rife with complaints about the extension. Maybe if it was something genuinely useful it'd be a different story, but this is a crappy price comparison app.

I think disabling all of the windows "spying" stuff disables those things. It's the first thing I did when I installed windows 10.

They actually have apps that disable the spying for you in one easy step, or you can go through the settings one by one yourself. Unsure if those apps install their own spying, but that's a different discussion.

I've not experienced that, and I sure hope I don't. I have, however, seen the popup claiming that Edge uses far less power and I ought to use it instead of Chrome. That popup always pisses me off for some reason.

Well the way I see it, Chrome somewhat "allowed" the integration so they have their part in the blame, but I am not the right person for this, I am a Firefox only user since 2008 I don't even have Chrome installed here on my machine hehehe.

Miscrosoft PSA (Personal Shopping Assistant) is also available on Firefox, they might as well start advertising to Firefox users. Will that be Mozilla's fault because MS advertise their products inside of Windows 10?

Why does Microsoft want to shove their products up our ass. They tried the same thing with the edge browser as well :/

Good question, somehow the people at MS seems to think that shoving products down our throat is the solution! (remember the Win10 free update nagware thing that would update to Windows 10 even if you didn't want to?)

Well I haven't heard about it until now, I do understand the main responsible here is Microsoft for trying to throw down our throats such crappy applications, I am hardly trying to to start a browser war here between Google and Mozilla, trust me.

I just feel that the browser developer is equally responsible when it comes down to make sure this can be disable should the user choose so, then again I do not know how this assistant works at all though so I can't say much about it... I have never seen it as I said; I have never used Microsoft Store and for the matter I do not even use Cortana or a lot of the W10 new features as I went the classic shell and other tweaks route to have my Win10 feel and be like the former Win7.

At the end what I can safely say is; hope ways around this kind of intrusion are made available regardless of the browser you're using.

Except the ad is within Windows, not Chrome. Check the screenshot, Chrome isn't even open ;)

It's only targeting Chrome for now but could easily be modified (update) to nag for any browser used.

I absolutely despise the sole idea of my (PAID FOR) OS advertising stuff to me. It's complete and utter bullshit that they would serve you ads after you paid over 100 bucks for their sub par software that you're forced to use if you want to play any AAA game. Up until now my configuration has avoided it, if I can't stop it any longer I swear this is the last time I install Windows natively on any of my machines. I'll just have it as a VM with pcie passtrough exclusively for games as soon as I change platform to one that has integrated graphics to run the main linux installation.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

I cant wait for micro-transactions to start coming to windows.

Clearly they think they can get away with all this stuff because people don't want to switch. But more and more people i know are migrating to a "windows like" Linux OS, or in more rare cases to apple computers.

And yet people still keep saying there is nothing wrong with windows 10. When the spying and the advertisements are baked into the OS, the product isn't the software, the product is you.

I really, really hope that Google has some policy against this kind of shitty behavior so that Microsoft's extension gets removed from Chrome.

Would be nice if Microsoft got hit by an anti-trust lawsuit as well. Seems like the only thing keeping Microsoft from fucking their users in the ass are lawsuits. They really need to be put in place again. They truly are a horrible company. Not even Google, the king of ads, has ads baked into their OSes. Especially not as system notifications (although Samsung did try that bullshit and got so much shit from everyone they backed down).
