intel core m vs core i U

I'm looking to get a small portable system, probably a 2-in-1. Depending on what I get though, I may end up with a core i5 u cpu or a core m cpu. looking at the specs on ark.intel.com it looks like they have almost identical performance, with the core m cpu having a lower boost clock on all cores but a higher boost on just one, along with a lower minimum speed and tdp. 

 

Do these really have about the same performance or do the core m cpus have a lower instructions per cycle?

Overall the U series vs the Y series within the same family (i5 or i7) should have a 20-30% performance benefit, or more if properly cooled (like in my thick-ass Flex 3). Linus' video on the Swift 7 shows the difference between the Y i7 (core M) in the Swift 7 and the 6500U in the HP Spectre, where it isn't properly cooled.

It would be more helpful if you provide what device you were actually looking to purchase. This is because there are difference between the different implementations of the processor.

But in general the Core I series CPUs have better performance and more power consumption compared to Core M CPUs. This is more important if you are using applications that require more processing power. For regular use, such as sending emails, taking notes, watching videos, etc., the hardware around the processor will be more important, like having more RAM or an SSD.

Ah yes, but now Intel has not only grouped dualcores into the i5 and i7 lineups, but the Core m5 and m7 are now i5 and i7, too... more confused, misinformed consumers!

Looking at maybe getting an acer switch alpha 12.

I can get it with an M cpu for <$500, or pay more for an i5 U.
