Questions about 4K

QuantumBit

So I recently saw a 4K SmartTV (42") for $300 in a store, and it got me interested. I always assumed 4K TV's were really pricey, but I guess not. So if I'm going to make a purchase I have some questions

1. I currently have a 1080x1920 TV in my house (40") and whenever I switch from normal chanels to the HD version I see a big difference, so I was wondering how do TV shows work on the TV? Would the image look really expanded and bad? Or (I doubt this is true but) is it sent to my tv at 4K? Same question for Netflix

2. Would I need a Kaby Lake PC connected to the TV (On edge) to have 4K netflix? Also I'm assuming only specific shows are in 4K and the rest get upscaled.

I probably have more questions but I can't think of any more right now :P

TV content will be upscaled to 4K, it will look probably the same as it does on your 1080p TV.

Question. What brand and model number is this TV. It may be 4K, but if it is from a crappy brand it could look horrible (bad colour, horrible viewing angles, etc.).

So no point in getting the 4K tv unless I have 4K blu rays?

For 1: It depends mostly on the upscaler and the quality of the source material.

I have a pretty lengthy post (in my signature) about scaling. Long story short, tv will look fine (but it won't look any better if it's not 4k native).

As for the second question, many modern tvs offer a dedicated netflix app so you don't need to connect a computer to it.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Yup, probably not.

But you Can have a .mkv or mp4 or whatever file extension 4k may use and watch it through normal players like Media Player Classic right? nothing but difficulty to actually have the physical content available in whatever format it is prevents your PC from playing it on a 4k TV, right?
