Dual and quad channel?

Is there any actual difference in ram listed as "dual channel" or "quad channel"? 

 

Ie: will 2 dual channel kits work in quad.

Nah not really, you an actually buy individual sticks and use em to populate dual or dual channel slots, the only difference is pricing really.

They're simply kits sold in two or four. 

 

The answer to your second question is yes.

there just kits. if you have 4 memory slots on your mobo doesnt mean you have quad channel memory. the z170 and z270 only support duel channel but have 4 memory slots where some x99 have 8 ram slots and all x99 cpus support quad channel. but for the most part if you game or just use a computer for web n stuff you wont notice a difference between duel and quad channel memory.
