I've always thought about what do I lose if God isn't real? Sure if he's not then I wasted some time and money however if he is real then I get to go to heaven. Also I think there is more of evidence that he is real then not. To me it requires much more faith if you believe we came from a bacteria (not saying all atheists believe in evolution) than if there is a God and he created us. I am a bit curious though, for those of you who are atheists then how do you believe we got here?

i have no idea how we got here. and i don't really think we can understand that fully. our brain was never developed to understand things like that, it developed in my opinion to survive for lets say 60 years tops. i mean just look at quantum mechanics or the fourth dimention etc. we can never fully grasp the idea because we can never truly experience it.

Do i believe in a god? no, i believe what i see.

I do however hope we aren't alone, i mean just think about it, the universe is absolutely massive, it's so big we can't imagine it.

And it doesn't matter where you go, there's nothing, no life, no civilization, nothing.

Just a bunch of dead planets...

To make it clear, i don't expect aliens either, just a bunch of insects would be awesome tbh :P

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

this runs down to a much deeper question, what is god? that will mean something different for almost everyone. i know people who think god is a concept rather than some divine being. that god is the act of love and giving, and that by doing those acts you spread god. i also know people who believe in god in its most bible'y sense. everyone believes in some form of right and wrong and eventually god is just a conceptual manifestation of that imo. and yes even the 'psychopaths' have an concept of right and wrong, just in an entirely different side of the spectrum. just like schizoid's have a different concept of reality. so for me this runs down to, what is the cornerstone for my moral beliefs? and i would say that that is the golden rule, the rule that comes back in every major religion. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Rule

I don't know if I should be called atheist or agnostic, I just never cared for religion and so far I have lived my life fairly well without devoting it to any... regardless if the premise of being a good human being is what matters most I doubt that following arbitrary rules such as don't eat pork will change anything in the "judgement day"

Atheist and theist say they believe and know god does or doesn't exist and an agnostic would be the one who doesn't know but believes.

agnostics are atheists. that is a common misconception. atheist literally means means without god. its a binary system. either you are with a theism or you're not. i call agnostics, agnostic atheists.

theism isn't about knowing if its true. heres the definition:

"belief in the existence of a god or gods"
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/theism

it doesn't say anything about knowing. only about believing. i have yet to encounter a dictionary that says you have to know its the absolute truth.

To get sappy for a moment. I believe there may be many gods. Even if they might only exist in the collective imagination of a group.

i've been a Buddhist for about 9 years now. Grew up in an atheist household but ended up going to church when the school i went to started the year and ended the year.

Spent some time as a pagan after that before turning to Buddhism. I'm a realist and i believe in science but i still felt like i needed some spirituality in my day to day life.

I think polytheism is a bit more entertaining than monotheism too. As the stories and myths are more fun to read.

I dunno man...

Religion could be totally real, or it could be a total hoax, we could be living in the matrix, who am I to say? I don't feel comfortable saying absolutely that there is a god or there isn't, 'cause what do I know?

However I've seen plenty of evidence that there isn't and very little (and much of it of questionable nature) that there is, so I'll stick with assuming the former for now.

I'm totally fine with people who want to be religious, as long as they don't actively force their opinions and beliefs onto anyone. Regardless of religion or anything else, that's one of the few things I am NOT ok with people doing.

I was raised a religious Jew, by the way.

but the same thing can be said the other way around. Instead of going to church and meeting your future wife you go to that party saturday night and never meet her. and to be honest there is plenty of evidence on both sides of the "does God exits or not" argument.

That was a pretty badly made point.

heres a better one: you where a brilliant biologist in school. You go on to study medicine, but find yourself at a crossroads. You could join $company1 and work on a new contraceptive, or you could become a heart surgeon. You choose option 2, because your belief in god and that contraception is wrong. You become a very successful heart surgeon and live a happy life. What you dont know is that alternate you who chose to work with contraceptives invented an extremely safe, cheap, and effective contraceptive that revolutionised the world.

What would you say if I told you that yes, god can't be rationally proven, but I've decided to believe on such a being anyway?

I would say thats simply bad choices. What reason to believe something if theres no evidence behind it?

Pascal's wager.

my retort would be that you lose opportunity in your life. Instead of going to that party on satirday night and meeting your future wife you go to church and never meet her. It would feel intellectually dishonest for me to worship a being when I know pretty well that he doesnt exist.

I thought Pascal's wager on this site would be a much harsher debate about Nvidia vs AMD ? :D
