Why not get W10 Education Edition?

Fun fact, you can actually call MS support and swap it to a new motherboard extremely easily (as long as the old one is no longer in use with the same key).

And how do you plan on disabling the computer lab computer using it? Microsoft will know that it was registered to a university, unsure how it'd go asking to register it to a single user.

I said it was a fun fact, not that it would work in your situation :D

Well that's precisely what I did when I tore down my old prebuilt and Frankensteined my current rig out of it, which included swapping out the mobo. It took 3 mins. Typing this on that very copy of Windows right now :D

Yup. All you have to do if I remember correctly is call their support number on a smartphone. They'll ask you if you're on a smartphone, if you say yes they hang up and text you a code, which you type into some "verification code" thing on the "your key is invalid" page once the new board is in. Then it spits out a code, you text that to the MS bot, they text you another, you type that in, and Bam, your key is now valid for that board. As long as you don't reinstall and try to use the old board again it shouldn't cause any problems.

But that's how the Titan Z came to outperform the 295x2 in a well ventilated case :( . Don't get me wrong, I would take those anyway, but :(:(:( .

:(

I know that as a workstation-conscious denizen of the internet, you like FLOPs. More FLOPs = better. But the 295x2 was a weird fucking piece of hardware, and the Radeon Pro Duo costs $1500, even though it's marginally more power efficient.

But my personal preference for AMD comes down to a single fact: AMD lets you tweak, and while they're most of the time just behind Nvidia out of the box, they offer the opportunity for a savvy user to get to say "I tweaked my AMD hardware to make it better than Nvidia's stock choice". I have felt like this especially since the release of Pascal. Pascal GPUs can't go past 2200 on air no matter what you do. But Polaris 10, the GPU I'm looking at, gives you overclocking gains from everything you can try, be it a voltage mod, a custom BIOS, or even better cooling. So I'm happy choosing the brand that makes me take that additional tweaking step. Whether it be undervolting an R9 Fury to reach better efficiency than the venerable GTX 980, or flashing a custom RX 480 BIOS to have it blow away the GTX 1060. AMD is the enthusiast's choice, it's just too bad their limited R&D budget makes them very rough around the edges.

any large organisation gets a bulk discount. MS gives them away to charities and schools dirt cheap because MS likes them young; they want you to get started in your career using their products.

I just now found out that Windows Education Edition is a thing, and the keys are way cheaper than normal Windows. I expected it to be very cut-down, but after some searching, apparently it doesn't have Cortana (which I find a good thing) and has WAY MORE other features than other versions! Why would anyone ever buy normal W10? This must be too good to be true. What am I missing?

Its free for students. i get the full enterprise and home from my uni. its only legal to use for one year but as far as i can tell there is nothing in the technology stopping you from using it. I got 2 activations on windows 7, the third on the same day got rejected by the MS servers. A lot of people from AUS and NZ come back from Singapore with inappropriate education retail software.

I agree very much so, but consistency is also nice, and that's why every bit of RAM and hard disk space (except the trashy Titan X) is error correcting, well cooled, and not water cooled (water+PC hardware = good mix o.O).

My personal "eck" towards AMD comes from my experience with their processors in the late 1990's and mid 2000's, their low-mid end and SFF GPU's in the same time frame, with both my own HD 7990's (long ago, and still), and trying to help out a buddy with his 380x's. I have never once had a good experience with them driver wise or otherwise (obviously not the case for everyone, in the same way that I have used seagate drives exclusively since the early 1990's and never had a single one fail, but everyone else thinks they're trash). Whether it be my 7990's performing better in 2 way CFX in a Mantle game ("better than directx"), my 7990, Radeon 7500, and several Allin-wonders cooking themselves, or the wonky performance of the 380x's I've encountered, I can't really trust their products anymore.

But, alas, I'm a B**** for dual GPU cards, and as soon as they come out with another that's air cooled, I'll be the first one to buy it, since Nvidia has apparently abandoned the concept. OpenCL support is a joke from Nvidia.

Lol your mention of seagate is funny to me, because I bought a Western Digital HDD and had no end of problems with it, ended up having to RMA 3 times. So ye, some companies might be better than others but exceptions exist everywhere.
