Seagate closing HDD manufacturing plant

Seagate is closing one of its largest hard drive manufacturing plant located in Sozhou, China. This will reduce the hard drive production from 55-60 million per quarter down to 35-40 million per quarter. The closing of the plant is part of Seagate's ongoing "optimization", where SSD has comes down price and increase in capacity. About ~2200 employees will be laid off as the result of this, along with the already ~8000 that was laid off back in 2016 from various locations. If Seagate plans to convert it to a SSD manufacturing plant, by replacing all of the current machines, with those that manufacture SSDs, it's going to take quite some time, until it's completed.

What does Wafer has to do with HDD? I thought HDD are not edible?

 

Anyway. I hope HDD price won't increase because less of them are being produced

converting it is going to be slow and costly but i would say probably worth it seeing as HDDs are becomeing less and less needed

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

I guess it makes sense. Less laptops are using HDDs, less people are buying storage upgrades that include hdds. I don't generally think of HDD when I hear upgrade. SSDs can store more information than HDDs. Only thing we need is lower cost, and if this is replaced with SSD manufacturing then it'll bring up supply, reducing the cost of SSDs; which will be good.

This is a good step in getting rid of HDDs

 

They are good for storing TBs of data but SSDs are closing in quick in terms of price per GB. Also ever since gen 2 SSDs, HDDs are just not as reliable.

Why not just shift the jobs into SDD production?

well this sucks for the roughly 2200 people that will lose their job, also i hope this decrease in production wont be to noticable in the price of seagate HDD's

Well, SSDs on rise it's understandable. But still those massve capacity 10TB+ HDDs are awesome.

Well an SSD and HDD will be an "upgrade" for my build since I'll be using a Samsung/Seagate laptop HDD.
