Nearly Dropped a Part/Lost a part

Hey all, Have you ever had a time where you have nearly dropped a part or lost a Part? Or even nearly broke one in a severe weather event/Earthquake?

If so, Tell me the item and what even you were in. (Could be just in general nearly losing a bit/dropping a bit btw)

 

I almost lost a $200 CPU ._. Scared the living hell out of me

I dropped my rx480 box literally two minutes after taking delivery of it.. that was a heart attack moment.

Luckily it only fell about 2ft, and the amount of foam in the box saved it

Dropped a 1tb hard drive the same day I bought it once. One of the only two hdd I've ever had not work on me.

Here they are 300 and above (6gb models)

3GB is 299-300

When I was a kid, one of my first jobs was on a farm, was in the wrong place and had a small tractor bucket dropped on my foot, work boots paid for themselves about 100 times over that day.

I managed to find some security-grade boots that have removable accessories (including interior lining for the winter) and those are pretty much my year-round choices in footware. Once a pair gets "retired" it gets labeled as shop boots and lives on for another couple years

Out of my own stupidity i dropped my B85 Killer motherboard on the case when it slipped out of my hands.

No harm was done, it worked perfectly after than and has been working since.

dropped my Phenom II X4 940 inside the case , bend like 60 pins almost Flat , took me less than an hour to fix it

Well I guess you could call it an oh shit moment but I was probing my PSU pinout to do custom sleeving and accidentally shorted it to the metal case tripping the short circuit protection. Didn't know at the time but had to disconnect everything to reset the unit and it worked fine but those few mins was a good panic.

I was using my old daily driver laptop that I have actually just retired to doing some other random stuff, and I dropped it on it's side. The hinges were already broken, but I didn't want the display to crack. And that probably helped lead the spinning HDD inside to it's early death. It's about half dead right now (so only corrupting my files). It is a Toshiba Satellite Pro C650, in case you need to know. Not a bad laptop at all, other than the touchpad, which is horrendously small.

I've destroyed way too many parts to wish to admit. From my time working in a warehouse assembling computers to stupidly burning myself on overheating CPU's that I've then dropped and broken.

My father made a habit of dropping his cellphones in the ocean. For some reason, he was always keeping them in his breast pocket, which didn't go well with boating (leaning over the side of the boat to get a fish, leaning out to reach for a rope etc etc.). I think he dropped 4 or 5 before coming to senses and putting his phone in a different pocket .

 

I left mine in my pants that my wife put in the washing machine. It didn't end well, even though it was waterproof...

I've done something similar. I ran a Pentium 4 without a heatsink and let it boot Windows 2000. By that time, I seriously could have cooked an egg. I, being quite dumb (keep in mind this was years ago), touched the thing. It didn't feel right.

yeah, was back in the Athlon XP era, Prior to built in thermal protection was a thing.

 

The fan on the heat block sounded... "off". so I went to the store. Silly me, left the machine running

 

got home, it appeared off. I couldn't remember if I shut it off or not. So, seeing it "off" i assumed I turned it off before I left.

 

Reached into to grab the metal of the heat sync. 

 

2nd degree burns to the tips of my fingers. 

 

only after the pain resided, I unplugged everything. Waited a few more hours did I come to learn that the CPU and Motherboard were permanently fried from overheating. heck, it was almost all charred.
